My Study Abroad Experience: London is Calling

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DESU chapter.

London is Calling

I feel like I’m in a never-ending movie of Harry Potter. The abundance of vegetation, the British accents, and the streets make it all seem surreal. London is absolutely stunning regardless of the gloomy cold weather. The city itself reminds me a lot of New York City and the concept of corner stores and convince stores make me feel like I’m back in the Big Apple. Personally, I think this is a good thing; the scenery can remind me of home when I get homesick but that’s just my personal reasoning.

The university that I am studying at this fall is University of Roehampton located in London. The campus is absolutely stunning here at Roehampton. It’s very modern with a couple of old buildings that have been renovated with freshly painted white walls and wooden floors and they have recently built a new massive library that stays open twenty-four hours! The WIFI in my dorm room is absolutely terrible so I’ll be spending all of my time in the new modern library that they have on campus.

Speaking of dorm rooms, I live in a dorm complex called Digby. Just like Harry Potter the dorms are split up into six houses. Think of Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. We compete against each other in events and earn points. The house that earns the most points is rewarded with events hosted only for them. Just like Harry Potter! Oh, and the events are super lit here at Roehampton.

From September 18-23 was Freshers week which is basically like welcome back week at DSU. However, there are no classes during Freshers week just events. My favorite event was Thorpe Amusement Park here in London. In despite, that was the same day that I became extremely ill, however, I made the most out of the experience. Also, the night life here in London is amazing! There is a party or something exciting going on every single night; even on Monday! To be honest it was great at first but then I started to become worn out from all the partying and now I’m currently ill which has made me quite completely.

Plus, class has started so maybe it’s a good thing that I’m ill because that means I’ll be focused for this first week of classes at University of Roehampton. No clubbing, partying, or late-night hangouts in general. Books and bed are my calling until I have fully recovered from this unpleasant internal beast called a cold (eye rolls).
