Through the Eyes of a Tigress: Reflections on the Latest Girl Anthems

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DePauw chapter.

Everyone’s talking about Miley these days. With the release of her “We Can’t Stop” music video, we began to grieve the life of Hannah Montana. After millions of viewers watched her strut around the stage in her underwear and latch onto Robin Thicke’s neck for approximately five minutes, we knew it was time to lay the country starlet we know and love to rest.

Let’s take a moment to say our goodbyes.

As much as I want to knock Miley’s new do, new ‘tude and new approach to life, there is a strange part of me that is all for her transformation. And it seems like the girls on DePauw’s campus I have talked to are all-aboard the Miley train. We are obsessed with her, her Zenon- Girl of the 21st century buns, and her abnormally long tongue. So, what’s the trick? How does she so flawlessly combine trash and class leaving everyone wanting to be her?

I took a moment to reflect. Whether we realize it or not, deep down we all know why we are so obsessed with the new Miley. In addition to her bangin’ bod, one thing we all want of hers: her serious confidence.

Her confidence is exactly why everyone listens to her music and watches her videos on repeat. And, in a way, her music is giving us some of her confidence too. When we are out at night, girls fearlessly take over a guys’ rooms at frats, dancing on tables and screaming along, “And we can’t stop, and we won’t stop!” Guys are equally attracted to Miley’s confidence too.  Why else would they feel secure enough to belt out a Miley song with a handle of Kamchatka in hand?

The top tracks on iTunes make it clear that confidence-boosting ballads are not just limited to our girl Miley. After Miley’s newest song “Wrecking Ball” came in at number one on iTune’s top hits, Katy Perry’s feel-good hit “Roar” and Lourde’s “Royals” came in after at numbers 2 and 3.  All these songstresses are big on confidence. Make sure to check out Katy Perry’s music vid  for “Roar” and watch 4 wonderful minutes of Perry without make-up, rolling around in the dirt and flexing her muscles with pride. As much as we would love to hate her, we can only love her for how she so fearlessly owns her video with pride.

So, what can we learn from our lady lyrists? Confidence is key.

The sexiest thing when you head to class or go out at night isn’t an article of clothing: it’s your confidence.

So, say what ya want to. It’s your party. You’re a champion. Live your fantasy as a ruler. And show off your best asset. No, it’s not whatever you show off in that loincloth you consider a skirt. It’s your confidence.

Until next time, fellow tigresses.
