Sassy BUT Classy: The Do’s and Don’ts of What to Wear on Freshman’s Debut on Fraternity Propert

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DePauw chapter.

Okay, so we get it.  Upperclassmen were there once too. I was there just a year ago for us sophomores.  You have waited for seven long weeks for this night. Who doesn’t want to look good on their debut at fraternity property? But listen up ladies, there’s a certain way to look good – and catch everyone’s eye – without looking trashy.  The rule of thumb first and foremost is to keep it sassy, but classy.

Tight skirts are okay. But don’t go out of your way to show off your bootay because let’s be honest, we all like a little bit of mystery – especially the boys.

Are you thinking about sporting that sexy crop top that shows off that six pack you worked hard on all summer?  Well, think again. Proud of you for getting those rock hard abs, but there’s a time and place to show them off, and this is neither the time, nor place. It’s just not classy.

Wedges? No. Heels? No. End of story. No further explanation needed.  They just aren’t worth the risk of falling, especially on your first night. You’ll thank me later, I promise.

The little black dress?  Classy and sassy, but maybe a little too much for the first night out on fraternity property.

Rompers? YES. Shorts and a cute top? YES. If you want to be bold, wear black and a bright color. Try statement necklaces or cute sandals. You could just keep it simple with a cross-body and be on your way.

Most importantly ladies, don’t overthink it. Don’t show up looking like you tried to hard or want to blend in with upperclassman. People will recognize you’re freshman, and we’re excited for you to be there, but remember: FIRST IMPRESSIONS DO MATTER.

When in doubt…  think like Kristen Bell, “I’m not a risk taker. I don’t do plunging necklines or really short skirts. I try to stay as classy as possible and provide a little mystery.”
