Monograms in College Vs. in the Real World

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DePauw chapter.

Being a female student at DePauw, monograms have proven to be a constant fashion trend to not only myself but also most female students on this campus. Whether they are on rain jackets, winter vests, baseball caps or tote bags, they are a prominent part of many women’s everyday attire in college. The question is whether or not it is socially acceptable to continue wearing these monograms after we have moved on from our lives as college, perhaps sorority, fun and flirty girls to the real world.

Here is my answer: NO. While it is totally fun and fine in college, as soon as that diploma is received, the monograms have got to go. Yes, it is tough to get rid of all these items that have seemingly defined us the last three years. I personally have a baseball cap and a vest with my monogram on them that consistently find their way into my outfit multiple times a week. Although I love these items, they will be gone as soon as I graduate. Monograms may make it seem as if we are stuck in our college girl years, possibly disallowing us from appearing to be professional women once we enter into the big, scary world. So, take advantage of your time in college in wearing these items – we only have a few more years in which it will be acceptable, so live it up! Rep that cute, intertwined three-letter design while you still have the chance and while it is still super trendy! And as hard as it will be, after graduation, get rid of these items forever. This will allow you to move on from your time as a college student and step into the next stage of your life as a professional.
