Looking Good While Doing Good

Looking Good While Doing Good

A common criticism among DePauw students is that there is nothing to do here in little old Greencastle. That is because the largest store we have is Wal-Mart; the closest retail chains are at least half an hour away, and closets can get dusty and clothes over-worn. Fall Break is finally upon us, and with perfect timing, considering us collegiettes are becoming desperate for some quality shopping. But why not get an extra day of splurging and retail therapy? This Friday, there is hope! We finally get the change of pace we have been looking for in the midst of midterms and cornstalks, all the while helping a great cause.

The annual Charity Denim event, hosted by Pi Beta Phi, will run from lunch to dinner on October 14. It will be held in the Lily dance room, located on the first floor of the Lily Physical Education and Recreation Center. And the best part? The space is already equipped with mirrors and changing areas so you can see your new cute jeans from any angle!

Charity Denim is a non-profit organization that is hosted by schools all around the country. They receive new, donated jeans and other clothing (such as tops and accessories) from a wide variety of designers, including True Religion and Seven jeans. All of this clothing is brought straight to college campuses for prices well under retail. And for DePauw’s retail deprived campus, this event could not come at a better time!

The most important thing to consider is the organization that all proceeds benefit: First Book. This is Pi Beta Phi’s national philanthropy, benefitting education through literacy in youth in underprivileged communities.

There really is no better combination than helping a great cause and looking good in the process. First Book hits close to home for DePauw and the Greencastle area; our small college town can certainly use this help because Putnam County has a significantly low literacy rate. It looks like the philanthropies on DePauw’s campus aren’t as distanced from us as we think! We should consider ourselves lucky that we can help out one another in our efforts of fundraising and awareness in easy and enjoyable ways!

Recap: Charity Denim = cute clothes for a great price that you can show off during Fall Break, at a convenient location for a good cause. Win, win, and win.
