I enjoyed a nice lunch with fellow DePauw student Hope Isabela Palalay to discuss her thoughts on politics, science and college life in general.
HC: Hope, so nice to catch up with you. I feel like we haven’t gotten a chance to talk in forever. Why don’t you tell our readers some facts about yourself!
CC: Well I am a biology major hopefully getting a minor in English literature, I am a member of Alpha Phi sorority and the Phi Delta Epsilon medical fraternity and I’m from Elizabethtown, KY but on campus I currently live in Warne 2 aka party central.
HC: Wow, I’ve never heard Warne be called party central before, interesting! Well, let’s jump into the interview! How was your Thanksgiving?
CC: It was incredible. I ate some dank stuffing; it’s my favorite part about Thanksgiving.
HC: Ohhh stuffing yum! What are you thankful for this year?
CC: I’m definitely thankful for all my friends and family and the opportunity to go abroad next semester.
HC: Where are you going next semester?
CC: I’ll be attending the University of Limerick in Ireland. I’m so excited! I plan on taking some interesting classes and my goal is to learn how to Irish dance and hang out at some cool pubs.
HC: That sounds like a blast! I’ve always wanted to go to Ireland. So you’re interested in science, what do you want to do with a biology major after DePauw?
CC: I’m actually not sure yet but maybe go to grad school and become a nurse practitioner.
HC: Hope, you’re going save the world some day, I have a lot of faith in you. So I heard that Governor Mike Pence announced recently that he is blocking Syrian refugees from entering our state. What are your thoughts on this important matter?
CC: Well, I don’t agree with his stance because I believe that we as human beings have a moral obligation to help those in need that are less fortunate than us so I think that Pence should allow these refugees into our community so we can keep them safe and help them any way we can.
HC: I agree with that Hope. I know there are a lot of different opinions out there on the Syrian refugees but you definitely hit the nail on the head in my opinion. Do you think that DePauw is a safe community for people to voice their opinions?
CC: I do think it’s a safe place for people to voice their opinions but I think DePauw could also be more accepting of other people’s opinions. People are not always heard on DePauw’s campus and I think that can be worked on.
HC: Okay, I definitely see where you’re coming from. Interesting. Well, since you are going abroad next semester, you only have a couple weeks left on DePauw’s campus until your senior year. What do you plan on
accomplishing during these last couple weeks?
CC: I definitely plan on getting asked to a couple Christmas formals. Ya know, why not take me? I’m fun and I like to party.
