5 Things to do Over Spring Break if You’re Staying Home

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DePauw chapter.

Warm weather is finally upon us! This week Greencastle got a dose of some sunlight with temperatures reaching up to 60 degrees. As I walked around DePauw, enjoying the 63-degree weather yesterday, I saw people relaxing outside on their porches and in the grass, and heard music blasting from fraternity houses. It was in that moment that I was reminded of why I loved DePauw so much.

Now of course, this warm weather makes us dream of spring break even more. As we sit in our classes, all we can think about is the sunny beach we will soon be on or the hot sand underneath our feet; spring break is so close we can almost touch it!

While hot sand, sunny beaches and a gorgeous view sound like the perfect spring break, some people are planning on going back home to enjoy the company of their family. Miami, Hawaii and Panama City beach all sound like wonderful spring break trips but for some, the couch in their living room sounds pretty ideal right about now too. So for all the people going home this spring break, I don’t blame you for wanting to chill with family or in your room by yourself but try to make the most out of your spring break as well because staying at home can be just as fun as sunny Miami (if you make the most out of it). So here are some tips to making your spring break at home exciting!

  1.  Go to a new restaurant (by yourself or with a group of friends)!! Trying something new is always exciting and what better time to do it then spring break! Besides, maybe tons of other people are travelling and it won’t be as crowded. Treat yourself and order a dessert or something expensive. If your friends can’t make it, that’s okay! I’ve learned that sometimes spending time by yourself is great too and sometimes we need a moment away from everyone else. Who knows, maybe this new restaurant will become your new favorite spot.
  2. Go to your local museum. Sometimes discovering the hidden gems of your city is quite thrilling. Whether it is an art museum or a history museum, museums are great places to go to feel inspired, educated and cultured. Explore the museum and try to take in as much as you can. I am sure that you will be amazed by how much you learn.

  3. Take a day trip. Taking a day trip with family and friends is a nice way to get away for a bit. Even if you can’t travel for a whole week somewhere, taking a short day trip and staying in a hotel can be really exciting. This is a nice way to bond with family and friends and see a couple of sites before getting on each other’s nerves.

  4. Find a show on Netflix to binge watch. You have seven days of spring break. Seven days, that’s 168 hours, or 10,080 minutes, or 604,800 seconds to obsess and binge watch a new show on Netflix. So make time to watch the new hit series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt or to finally watch Sons of Anarchy or even rewatch your guilty pleasure, One Tree Hill.

  5. Go see a play. Go to the closest theater and treat yourself to a professional play. Some popular plays that are showing in Indianapolis are Dirty Dancing and Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.
