It’s That Time of Year Again: Fall Fashion Breakdown!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DePaul chapter.

As summer comes to a quick close and classes begin once again, there is one thing that is on the mind of everyone stepping outside: the temperature. It has noticeably dropped in the recent weeks, forcing everyone to begin the dreaded shift from fun summer crop tops to warm winter clothes. This year’s winter trends differ slightly from that of last year’s, however the staples of every girl on campus’ outfit remain the same: cute outerwear and boots.

Cargo Jackets

Lincoln Park’s most popular fall fashion trend is a green cargo jacket (left). This is easily paired with almost any outfit, from sweatpants to even a nice dress and tights. J. Crew recently came out with a similar style cargo jacket (right), but fleeced lined for those colder Northern California mornings.

Puffy Vests

Another popular outerwear trend, seen throughout campus, are vests. Puffy vests used to be popular around our middle school and early high school days, but have since fallen out of style in later years. However this year they have come back with a bang with numerous stores selling a variety of vests. Lilly Pulitzer just came out with their line of solid, colorful vests with a signature pattern inside (left), while J. Crew has stuck with the basics of slim, classic vests (right).

Riding Boots

Riding boots came back in style a few years ago and have stuck to this day as a staple piece. Although they have always been more of a preppy boot, they easily dress up a legging-sweatshirt outfit and pull it together nicely. Tory Burch has completely sold out their plain black riding boots (left) on both their website and on the Nordstroms website. A little more of an edgier boot by Vince Camuto (right) has also been a popular style around campus, loosing the preppy status and adding a slight edge.

Flannel

And last, but certainly not least, is the Chicagoan college student staple: the flannel. These once-lumberjack notorious shirts can now be seen on a wide variety of girls and guys alike. They’re quite versatile and can be paired with leggings, jeans, or even skirts and tights. The popular style involves tying the flannels around one’s waist waist, a nod to class 90’s grunge-chich trends.

Mele Hamaski & Cate Baskin

It’s pretty easy to follow this season’s trends, whether keeping up with trends is your thing or not! Pair any kind of leggings and plain long-sleeved shirt with one of these jackets, vests, or boots and you’re set! Accessorizing is also easy with a chunky gold watch, an Alex & Ani bracelet to pair, and simple gold earrings. Although it’s always a sad transition packing away the crop tops and high-waisted jean shorts, it can still be fun to dress this winter and can make the gloomy days a little less of a bummer.

Here’s to a great — and fashionable! — start to Fall Quarter!
