9 Feminist TV Shows You Should Be Watching

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Denison chapter.

Looking for something new to watch, or maybe you’ve heard of a few of these shows but never known the deal? These 9 shows are essential viewing for anyone who loves to watch bad ass women do their thing and own the screen. So cuddle up with your girlfriends, and get watching!

1. Veronica Mars

Not only is this my favorite show of all time, but it also recently got a follow up movie. This show centers on the misadventures of teen sleuth Veronica Mars, played by the impeccable Kristin Bell, as she solves her best friend’s murder and deals with issues of income inequality, race and slut shaming (to name a few) at a California high school.

2. Buffy the Vampire Slayer

This show is the GOAT when it comes to feminist tv. A teen girl kicks the ass of the living dead every day and still manages to make it to class in platform heals? Buffy is iconic, and if you haven’t had the pleasure, you have yet to live a full life.

3. Battlestar Galactica

It’s been eight years since this show ended, and frankly, it still hasn’t gotten old. Kara Thrace a.k.a. Starbuck is the OG badass. All the women in this show are complex and different, there is no one woman that fits a single stereotypical mold, just like real women!

4. Orphan Black

With one twist after another, this show never lets up. And one actress plays almost all the characters, let me just say, clones have never seemed more cool!

5. The Legend of Korra

If you grew up watching Avatar the Last Airbender, you have to watch Korra. You get so see many of the characters we came to know and love, and are introduced to a whole new team Avatar along the way. This time, with a girl leading the show for good measure!

6. Insecure

Issa Rae created, wrote and stars in this hilarious show on HBO. Super real, witty and addicting.

7. Glow

I started watching this Netflix show because I was already a fan of the comedian, Mac Maron, but I soon realized the best part is the huge and diverse cast of bad ass women. They learn how to wrestle and become friends along the way! It is fun and at times painfully truthful to life as a woman, and all the crap that comes with it. They just got renewed for a second season, so get bingin’.

8. Crazyhead

I did not know what to expect when I found this show on Netflix, but I certainly wasn’t expecting two British women who battle zombies and deal with boy drama at the same time.

9. Grace and Frankie

Older woman can be cool and sexy too! I love this show because not only is it freaking hilarious, but it also shows the lives and feelings of people who are so often completely left out of the Hollywood narrative; older women. And let me just say, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin know how to keep life raunchy!
