10 Reasons You Need Foodscape in Your Life

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Davidson chapter.

Foodscape is a mobile app created by the Davidson College Office of Sustainability in order to create a user meal and entrée preference platform and increase awareness of sustainable food practices. This is why you should download it now!

1. Because food

Who doesn’t love food? Foodscape is all about food.

2. The app was created by Davidson students

Show support for you fellow Davidson students by downloading the app! A team of students created it during summer 2015.

3. Know what’s on the menu before you get there

Ever not been able to decide what to order? Ever felt overwhelmed by the number of choices on a menu? If you download Foodscape, you can check out the menu long before you get there (don’t get obsessive, some surprises are still fun. :) )

4. Identify your favorite dishes all in one convenient place

Can’t remember what you had last time that was so delicious? By swiping right on a dish, you can save it as a favorite.

5. Identifying your dish preferences provides feedback to each venue

Feel like you eat the same thing everyday? Ever wish that something else was on the menu at Davis Café or in the at Vail Commons? If you identify your preferences by swiping right or left on a dish, you are providing feedback to the venue.

6. Incentive to try new venues on and off campus

Have you ever been to Pickled Peach, Fork!, Summit Outpost, or Carrburritos? They are among the places on and off campus that are on Foodscape, and therefore use sustainable food practices.

7. Discover how sustainability is related your everyday life

You might be surprised to learn that sustainability, which Foodscape defines as “a framework that includes the inextricable links among social equity, environmental integrity and economic prosperity—often referred to as the Triple Bottom Line,” can be incorporated into everyday decisions.  Every decision we make affects these three factors.  Food is an excellent example of that.

8. Learn about sustainable food practices

Food and sustainability overlap in a varity of ways. Foodscape works to track the food you eat from seed to fork. Each restaurant has sustainability icons, including fair food practices, recycling, local food options, and charity contribution icons.  Dishes also have icons, such as food from scratch and dish in season icons.

9. Know the nutrition facts

Dishes also have icons that identify them as nutrient-rich, carb energy, healthy fat, and good sources of protein.

10. Feel good about what you’re eating

Without stressing about what to order, already knowing your favorites on the menu, gaining information about sustainable food practices, and having tools to make healthy choices, it’s basically impossible to not feel good about eating when using Foodscape.
