Let Beyonce be Pregnant and Happy

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CUA chapter.

Recently, Beyonce annouced on her Instagram account that she was pregant with not only one child, but two. Many of her fans( myself includedo), the interent and the whole entire world raved over her amazing news. A couple of days after her annoucement, she posted her beautiful and vibrant maternity photos which included her daughter Blue Ivy but Beyonce and the twins slaying underwater. And of course, Let us not forget the amazing performance she put on at The Grammy’s channeling her inner Oshun Goddess( From the Yoruba religion). I was listening to one of my favorite Podcasts called ” The Friendzone” and they talked about an article that a woman wrote for the New York Post criticizing Beyonce for throwing her pregnancy in the world’s face when there are women who suffer miscarriages or unable to concieve. I knew as soon as I heard the nature of this article I did not want to read it because I knew it was going to make me angry.

But then I saw another Op-Ed peice from The New York Post critcizing Beyonce’s pregnancy called ” Having a baby isnt a miracle and doesnt make you a goddess”, I’m going to stop the article right at the title. For some women it is difficult to concieve a child, a lot of women expierence miscarriage if you actually did your research like a journalist should do you would know that Beyonce suffered a miscarriage before she had Blue Ivy. So actually, her not only being able to have Blue Ivy after that happened, then being blessed enough to not only get pregnant again but to have twins is a miracle. She starts of the article talking about Katherine Heigl’s expierence being pregnant while filming a scene and making the implication that she was very relaxed about her pregancy. Ma’am, I will stop you again, so Beyonce posting maternity photos is her being extra about her pregnancy? So she is not aloud to share this very special moment of her life with her fans through photographs? Stop telling women, especially Black Women how they should project. Lastly, on the note of Beyonce being a Goddess, Beyonce was challenging a spirtual diety  called ” Oshun” from a Yoruba religion Orisha that is founded in Africa and Latin America, Oshun represents love, fertility, beauty and luxury. Her performance had a meaning behind it because she is pregnant she believed chanelling Oshun would be fit for her performance. The time this author took critcizing Beyonce’s performace and pregnancy she could have look up all of this information on Google to understand her concept.

I end this article to say this: People need to stop telling women how to project their happiness. This does not only apply to Beyonce, this applies to any woman. But I only often see this when a Black woman wants to spread her joy to the internet and commonly I see White women want to knock Black women’s happiness, love and joy as if it was a threat. Let women be pregnant and happy, gay and happy, Trans and happy and so much more. Stop putting your personal insecurities on other people, especially Black women.
