There are always those nights when you don’t feel like drinking, but still want to go somewhere fun with friends. Given the limited number of places that are actually open late night in Ithaca, this task can prove to be difficult. Nonetheless, I’ve heard a couple of my friends rave about Waffle Frolic, and decided to explore it one Friday night with my friends.
Expecting a conventional dessert cafe, I was surprised by the cool, laid-back atmosphere of the place. Waffle Frolic, a waffle bar and coffee house, was opened just last year by Ithaca College graduates devoted to creating a fun place for foodies. The upstairs area features couches, spaces for reading, and everyone’s favorite: free Wifi. The menu features numerous vegan options, as well as creative dishes such as Chicken and Waffles.
Impressed by the interior but even more excited to try the food, I ordered a buckwheat waffle topped with fruit and Purity ice cream (pictured below). There was a plethora of toppings to choose from, from chocolate chips to homemade fruit compote. The waffles were delicious, and a fun share with friends. Priced at $6 for two waffles, the portions were enough to be satisfying. In addition, Waffle Frolic serves a variety of local coffee, and although I am not a coffee drinker, my friends who were seemed to enjoy it. After eating, we sat, chatted for hours, and explored the small library filled with interesting reads.
“The place is so homey, and I would definitely come back just to chill and read,” says Annie ’13. Whether you are here alone or with a group of people, you will most definitely feel comfortable.
Waffle Frolic is open until 12am on Fridays and Saturdays, so next time you are in need of a late night adventure, this waffle bar can be an ideal place to enjoy good food and good conversation.
