New York Fashion Week 2014

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Conn Coll chapter.

New York Fashion week (NYFW) has once again come and gone, and as always, it lived up to all the hype. When I went to high school in Manhattan I loved NYFW just because of the thrill of seeing everyone on the street show off his or her individual style. I would wander around the city, watching models running around to different shows, and stylists carrying bags on bags of clothing as they rushed from one place to another. From the invitations sent out, to the styling of the models’ eyebrows, no detail of a show was overlooked. Each year designers try to top whatever they’ve previously done. Working with the fresh new “it” models, bold colors, and lots of textiles, made this year no exception.

My favorite shows to look out for every year are Rag & Bone, Alexander Wang, Rodarte, and Edun. Even though the shows are all about the designers, sometimes my favorite part is seeing what guests wear to them. Great bloggers keep up with the day-to-day outfits they see on people attending the show. Whether it’s the style of a celebrity sitting front row at a show, or some great street style, the blogs catch it all. Manrepellar, We Wore What, Scout Sixteen, My Stiletto Life, and Covering The Bases are great blogs to check out for all things NYFW and fashion in general.

A photo of the models ready for the Rodarte show, the texture and detail in this collection are very on point.

Bono and his wife Ali’s line Edun had a beautiful cohesive collection that seemed to bring together a lot of trends we already see starting to form. With the oversized sweaters, flowy tops, detailed fabric and Birkenstocks they managed to tie everything together in a seemingly beautiful way.

Celebrity attendance is very important at these shows. If designers have a high number of A-list celebrity sitting in the front at their show, their show of interest can greatly influence others. Just think about how people are always trying to mimic celebrity trends! One of the most talked about guests this year was Rihanna. She attended the Edun show in a white, plunging neckline, suit jacket, and white, billowy, cropped pants. Talk about a statement outfit!
