Whether it be your mother, neighbor down the street, friend’s grandmother, chances are you already know someone who has battled breast cancer. 1 in 8 women develop breast cancer in their lifetime. As Jocelyn Kratzert, co-chair of Relay for Life at Conn, said, “We tend to forget how many women are touched by this form of cancer.” In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Relay for Life has sponsored the event ‘On Wednesdays We Wear Pink’ to promote a sense of support and unity around campus for those who have themselves been affected by breast cancer, or touched by loved ones who have fought it. “Encouraging everyone to wear pink for a day is a great way to unite the entire campus around an issue that is guaranteed to affect everyone,” co-chair Sophie Sharps stated.
“Basically we are trying to have a presence on campus because cancer has a presence in everyone’s life,” Kratzert said. Although the event is only lasts a day, Relay for Life is a club that works year round to fundraise for the American Cancer Society, whose mission is to raise awareness and fight cancer. Relay for Life is a community fundraising walk for ACS with the goal of, “making progress toward a world without cancer.” And you can help! Start a team, walk for a team, or simply donate! Conn’s Relay will take place on Saturday April 26, 2014.
