Camels of the Week: Emily Moran and Sabina Flandrick

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Conn Coll chapter.

Meet our latest Camels of the Week, Emily and Sabina! Emily and Sabina are this year’s new Her Campus Campus Correspondents. So far, they love hearing HC writers’ ideas and tracing writers’ personal voices and enthusiasm throughout their articles. In addition to running all things HC at Conn, the two seniors juggle multiple majors and extracurriculars all while still trying to figure out what they want to be for each night of Halloween. Read on to learn about Emily’s and Sabina’s summer internships, favorite dining spots, and most embarrassing Camel moments! (Hint: They involve sailing class and the JA toaster!!)

Class Year: 2017 SENIORS!!!

Hometown:

Emily: Melrose, MA

Sabina: Boulder, CO

Major:

Emily: Biology and English

Sabina: Government and Psychology

Extracurricular activities:

Emily: Her Campus and hopefully very soon I’ll be volunteering as a Clinician’s Assistant!

Sabina: Her Campus, SAAC, XC and track, I also volunteer through Community Partners and play sports with kids from New London middle schools.

What are you watching on Netflix?

Emily: That 70’s Show & NCIS

Sabina: Rewatching Gilmore Girls

Cro Dance go-to dance move?

Emily: “I like to call it the wiggle, but most of my friends would describe it as a violent and chaotic movement of my arms and legs…”

Sabina: Sadly, I really am a terrible dancer.

Spirit animal:

Emily: Probably a koala bear!

Sabina: One time I took a quiz to find out my spirit animal and it said Beyonce so…

Party anthem:

Emily: Ohh this is tough I usually have a three song rotation that I play non-stop until I’m sick of them. Currently I really like “Perfect Strangers” by Jonas Blue!

Sabina: Emily also loves anything Fetty. “Timber” is a classic, but currently probably “Closer” or anything I can scream the lyrics to.

Toll House Cookie Pie or Brownie Krinkles?

Emily: Well since I’m gluten free, I can’t enjoy these amazing looking desserts, but I’m a HUGE fan of Vanilla ice cream over a brownie!

Sabina: Probably Toll House Pie but that’s a tough one.

Shain 1st Floor, 2nd Floor, or 3rd Floor?

Emily: 1st floor when I just have some quick homework to finish up. 3rd floor when I need quiet and productive midterm/final time.

Sabina: 2nd.

Festivus or Floralia?

Emily: Floralia, hands down. It’s such an exciting day spent with friends outdoors enjoying music all day!

Sabina: Floralia for sure

Favorite dining hall on campus?

Emily: Winchester 8! I live across the road this year and my friends, and I make some pretty amazing dinners!

Sabina: I go to Harris a lot, but soup and bread in Freeman is a must!

Favorite dining spot off campus?

Emily: Recovery Room in New London, it’s not a fancy place but the food is amazing!

Sabina: Bleu Squid in Mystic or Paul’s Pasta.

What are you being for Halloween?

Emily: I am being an alien one night, and I haven’t figured out my other costumes yet but most likely something easy to assemble the night before…

Sabina: I am being a pig one night but a “party animal” pig and then I still have to figure out the other.

We heard you both had amazing summers! Can you tell us more about them?

Emily: I interned at Massachusetts General Hospital at the Mucosal Immunology and Biology Research Center working with leading researchers and doctors on Celiac Disease. I had the opportunity to work on a current research project involving a protein that was recently discovered that is pivotal to the pathogenesis of the disease. I attended many seminars and lectures and was able to learn from some of the world’s brightest doctors. It was a wonderful experience!

Sabina: I interned at a victim law center in Denver that helps victims of violent crimes get legal assistance, and it was amazing! I also hiked as much as I could.

Sabina, what is your experience like on the Conn Coll Women’s Cross Country and Track teams? What propels you through that last mile?!

It is a big time commitment and a lot of hard work, but I love every minute of it and wouldn’t give it up for anything. Having the support of a team is amazing and I love all the girls on the team. That last mile is tough but it’s almost over, I tend to think of all the practices that have prepared me for it.

Emily, can you tell us about your role as a Student Adviser?

Sure! In between my first year and sophomore year, I was a student advisor for 16 girls all in the same seminar together. It was great helping them through orientation, registration and the first week of school. I loved being able to share some advice, the biggest challenge of coming to college is adjusting to a new environment away from home so being there to just give my two sense about my experience was great.

What is your favorite place on campus?

Emily: My favorite place on campus is Tempel Green. It’s a great location because it’s where so many members of our community gather to watch sports, hang out with friends, do homework (when the weather is nice), and soak up the sun. On my final tour at Conn, it was a beautiful day and Tempel Green was littered with groups laughing, throwing around a frisbee or football, playing music and relaxing. I love it and for me this was the final push towards committing to attend Conn!

Sabina: Tempel Green is definitely one of my favorites as well. I also enjoy the arbo. I took a sailing class this fall, with Emily actually, and being out on the river was amazing.

Do you have a favorite class or professor taken at Conn?

Sabina: I really loved my Women and World Politics seminar.

Emily: My favorite class at Conn was probably Cells taught by Professor Owen. His class really excited me about biology and that is why I decided to declare my biology major.

Do you have an embarrassing Camel moment?

Sabina: Freshman year my toast got stuck in the JA toaster and it caught on fire, and flames were coming out. I didn’t make toast for a while after that.

Emily: As Sabina mentioned earlier we took sailing together this semester and on my first day, we were heading back into the dock, and I was confused which way to turn the tiller and I turned it way to the wrong side…Our sails caught too much wind and the boat capsized only feet from the dock. My partner and I ended up in the water frantically trying to right the boat. That day my dignity sunk to the bottom of the Thames. Definitely my embarrassing Camel moment!

What is one thing you have not checked off your Conn bucket list yet?

Sabina: I’ve checked a lot off the bucket list, but I think a picnic in the arbo would be fun!

Emily: I would have to agree with Sabina, as senior year winds down I’m sure we’ll come up more exciting bucket list items!

As graduating Seniors, what advice would you give to underclassmen?

Sabina: It goes by faster than you think. Go to class, go to office hours, and attend talks. The more effort you put in, the more you’ll get out of conn. But also have a little fun along the way!

Emily: Again, I would have to agree with Sabina! Make the most of this college — it will help you, I promise! Enjoy moments with everyone around you. These are the connections that you will keep for a lifetime!

What is your favorite thing about being a Campus Correspondent?

Emily: My favorite thing about being a Campus Correspondent is seeing every member’s voice through their articles, blogs or snapshots. I love the enthusiasm that so many of our HC members have when they write an article, and it comes through in their pieces.

Sabina: I really enjoy being able to read everyone’s articles and encourage their ideas.
