8 Ways to Take Care of Yourself During Finals

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Conn Coll chapter.

No matter how many times we go through finals, they never get easier (in fact, they probably get more difficult). With an inexplicable amount of work to accomplish, schoolwork is the priority over everything. Nevertheless, is it important to stay healthy during this stressful time, and neglecting our usual routines can be more disruptive than we realize. Here are some tips on taking care of your mind and body during finals!

Go outside

As important as it is to find your favorite study space during finals, it is just as important to get out of that space from time to time! Spending your study breaks outside can help to relieve stress, so consider going on a short walk in the arboretum, or taking your lunch break outside.

Get exercise

Similar to spending time outside, exercise is a great tool for relieving stress. Whether it feels like it or not, there is always time for a shortened workout. A twenty-minute run or a simple, dorm room workout gives your mind a break, perhaps making you more productive when you get back to the books!

Stretch

If the idea of working out seems too overwhelming in the height of finals, get your blood flowing by doing a quick stretch during your study breaks. Sitting at your desk all week is not a kind way to treat your muscles, so wake them up with a stretch!

Eat right

The extra amount of work during finals requires extra mental energy, which means more food, right? Whatever your rationalization is for eating more during finals, not to worry, as long as you stay healthy! Munching on a bag of potato chips or candy along side your studies will not provide you with the energy necessary to get you through finals. Keep your meals hearty and healthy, and plan out energizing snacks for each day.

Go out to eat

Take the extra time (if you have it) to drive off campus and treat yourself to a meal out. After all, you deserve it, and it may give you the boost to finish that English paper, or keep studying for that biology exam.

Bathe!

Keep up your usual grooming habits. Enough said.

Don’t forget to sleep

Despite all of the work that must get accomplished, none of it matters if you are too much of a zombie to remember everything you have studied! Sleeping habits will certainly vary during finals, but it is important to be conscious of them. Determine when you are most productive. For example, if you are most productive in the mornings, set an alarm to wake up early, and then nap in the afternoon. If you are a night owl, let yourself sleep in late in the morning.

Give your brain a break

Don’t feel guilty for keeping up with your nightly Netflix during finals! Allowing your mind to experience something other than work and sleep may even be good for you.
