Beating the February Blues

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Colgate chapter.

February can be a tough month for students at Colgate; tests and papers accumulate quickly, study abroad/summer plans need to be finalized and, perhaps worst of all, the sun seems to have vanished entirely. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that many students find themselves trapped in the “February Blues.” Here are a few tips to battle the stress and dreariness that February so often brings:

1)     Sports : Whether or not you are a varsity athlete, there are ample opportunities on campus to get involved in sports. Intermural sports are a great way to get fit with a group of friends. For more of a challenge, join a club sport! Club sports are fun not just because you get to meet a whole new group of people on campus who share your passion, but also because you get to meet students from other local colleges and universities during games. Exercise via intermural sports or club sports releases endorphins, which are hormones that are scientifically proven to make you feel good! If you are not athletically-inclined, make an effort to attend a Colgate athletic event at least once a week! Varsity games are very exciting, and will certainly help you take your mind off of any academic or social concern that has been making you anxious.

2)     Make the most of Downtown: Despite its small size, Hamilton offers plenty of activities for students. Take a breather from all of the hustle and bustle happening on campus and head downtown!  To get your creative juices flowing, scout out some local stores (Price Chopper, Dollar General, etc.) for crafts to decorate a friend’s desk or your roommate’s half of the room. Not only will your friend or roommate be extremely appreciative, but you’ll have fun in the process!  Another way to beat the February Blues with friends is simply going out to dinner in town. The Royal Indian Grille makes a dangerously tasty vegetable samosa, and the Sexi Lexi Roll from The Blues Concept is to die for!

3)     Seek academic help or advice: Make an effort to go out of your comfort zone in terms of academics this February. Never been to your Geology professor’s office hours? Make it your number one priority! Professors are fun to talk to one-on-one, and are extremely resourceful (they might even give you major hints about the types of questions you should expect to see on your next test!) Talking about your stress is also the most important way to combat it. Seek out your academic advisor and just fill them in on what has happening in your life. You might be surprised with how much more relieved you feel afterward!

4)     Get involved with Outdoor Education: Outdoor Education offers numerous classes and events every semester that are super cool and very unique!  Rock climbing is just one of the many activities sponsored by Outdoor Education. It is a great way to burn steam while strengthening your muscles. The Angert Family Climbing Wall, where rock climbing classes are held, is a fantastic facility, complete with crash pads and holds! The Climbing Wall also hosts Ladies Night every Tuesday from 7-8pm for any female Colgate student, which is a great way to try rock climbing, even if you aren’t enrolled in a class. Outdoor Education classes are extremely rewarding, and will certainly make you feel more self-confident this February.
