Trying New Things Jan Plan Style

By Rebecca Aliber
January 9, 2013 - 10:46am

To the unfortunate population with no connection to the hill, the idea of Jan Plan brings forth nightmares of cold, dark, and dreary days. The sun sets unreasonably early, the temperature drops below zero, and a good chunk of your friends are on some sunny beach tanning and studying marine animals while you bear knee deep snow on your trek to class. But for those of us lucky mules, Jan Plan couldn’t be more exciting. If you haven’t had the opportunity to experience a winter term yourself, you may wonder why we’ve used the words “lucky” and “exciting” in the same sentence as “Jan Plan.” So, those of us at HCC want to share some of the many reasons why this month should bring forth a sigh of relief....

Chilly Weather Activities

By Madeline Strachota
December 10, 2012 - 11:20am

While Waterville hasn’t gotten much more than a dusting of snow, a call home today got me daydreaming of all of my favorite winter activities when I heard about Winter storm Caesar. The storm is currently dumping buckets of snow in my home state, Minnesota, just in time for me to head home for the holidays. Thus, I have compiled a list of my top 5 chilly weather activities. The Shock of Going Home

By Lydia Nicholson
November 30, 2012 - 2:29pm

Going home after being at college is a strange experience. When you went home for Thanksgiving you might have noticed, like I did, that you weren’t used to being in the real world. How bittersweet it was to see high school friends; how nice it was to have your parents to take care of you, and at the same time how bothersome it was to have them hover over you.  By the time break was over, you might have never wanted to leave home, or maybe you wanted to go back to Colby as soon as possible. Here are some things I noticed about being home and some advice I wish I’d known on how to handle it. READ MORE

The Latest On The Discourse

By Charlotte Wiesenberg
November 14, 2012 - 3:31pm

You went to bed early last night. Your alarm goes off at 8:30 AM, and you feel refreshed, well rested, and ready to start a new day. And then you pick up your iPhone to see that you have 18 emails to go through. Most of them are junk: the Daily Candy’s “What Your Drink Says About You,” Nordstrom’s “Free Shipping Alert,” Regina M. Ouimette’s “Message From Security” (kill me, winter parking ban), Roger Woolsey’s “JanPlan Internship Deadline” (even though you already signed up for a class), and ah…the Civil Discourse. A Colby Classic. READ MORE

A Plea for the Revival of the Classy Party

By Eliza Appleton
November 7, 2012 - 12:00pm

I was a freshman once. I remember walking into sweaty, beer-soaked apartments, thinking wow, this is awesome. Not being able to move in a party meant it was a fun one. More friends to make, more boys to dance with, more people around so that I could make a name for myself on the hill. Being crammed into a Dana 5-man with a bunch of muscular boys whose names I didn’t know sounded like the most exciting thing on earth. If I was at that party, I was cool. That was the bottom line. MIXING IT UP: DESIGNER COLLABORATIONS

By Sarah Braselton
October 25, 2012 - 2:23pm

A growing favorite of the fashion industry, seasonal designer collaborations lend inspiration, innovation and spontaneity to the market. Historically conceived of as a way to enlarge the popular audience of high-end designers, collaborations make otherwise unaffordable, inconceivable designs readily available. From Halston’s line for JC Penney in the 1980’s to Karl Lagerfeld’s 2004 collection for H&M, consumers have willingly waited in long lines to lay claim to a design connected with a name of such esteemed value. Today, the holiday season creates a larger-than-ever demand for such collaborative specialties, driven by the attraction to a Jil Sander for Uniqlo or Proenza Schouler for Target that will only be available for a very limited time....

Library Study Spaces

By Lydia Nicholson
October 12, 2012 - 3:02pm

For such a small campus Colby has an amazing number places to study. Every person has their own favorite, for some people it’s their dorm room or dorm lounge, some people choose the spa or a classroom. But, for me I haven’t had to go further than the libraries to find places to suit all my studying needs. It’s good to remember there are actually three libraries on campus, and each has its own personality and comes with its own benefits and downsides.
