James O'Brien

James Noble Porter O’Brien. Yup, I just started an article with a sentence that doesn’t actually have a main verb—in fact, all it posses is a subject. But I had to do it because James O’Brien aka Obi has such a presence at Colby that his name can stand alone. You think I’m exaggerating? Then let me tell you a little story. It’s actually kind of long, but I think you’ll like it. READ MORE

Madi Louis

By Charlotte Wiesenberg
October 1, 2011 - 9:21am

I remember the first time I talked to Madi Louis, ’13. It was before the “Getting to the Greek” Loudness last year. Madi and I were in a mutual friend’s room with a bunch of other girls. She came up to me and said, “Charlotte, right? You donated to ASB and I am so grateful for that.” My first thought was, “wow, she is so polite!” Out of the hundreds of students who donate to Colby organizations, she remembered me? As I’ve gotten to know Madi better, it comes as no surprise that she remembered me. In fact, I’m sure she would remember anyone who donated to ASB, came to a Hillel dinner, attended a CVC one time event, or asked for her help with a paper. I’m sure that plenty of people would agree with me that Madi is one of the most thoughtful students on...

Dave Murphy

Dave Murphy is my CA. Yup, that means he has to deal with my obnoxiously loud voice and bumpin’ stereo system all the time. And he’s already asked me extremely politely to be quiet on a Thursday night. And of course I obliged, partially because I’m generally a respectful person, but mostly because he’s the man. I mean really. Who wouldn’t love to have a former Hollister model as their CA, right? I bet you didn’t know Dave used to model, did you? I bet you think that he should continue to model, don’t you? I know I do. But seriously, Dave is so much more than just really, really, ridiculously good looking.

The Faces of COOT: Becky Newman and Julia Knoeff

By Adele Priestley
September 14, 2011 - 8:36pm

Meet the bear cub and the unicorn of the Colby Outdoor Orientation Trip (COOT)— Becky Newman ’13 and Julia Knoeff ‘13, respectively. Shortly after arriving on campus for COOT leader training, the committee introduced themselves and identified their “spirit animal” to the group standing before them in Page Commons. And I have to admit, knowing this fact gave me a much better idea of who these two strangers were. However, as co-coordinators of the entire program, neither was a stranger for very long.

Andy V.

By Eliza Appleton
May 11, 2011 - 8:04pm

I sit in front of Andy VandenBerg ‘14 in my Chemistry for Citizens class. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 10:00 AM, he walks in with a smile on his face, ready to sit through the fifty-minute lecture laden with non-chemistry-enthusiasts. And he was a “Feb-Frosh” just like I was (even though we technically came to Colby in January—I’m not sure I understand that term entirely), and although he went to Salamanca, Spain, and I went to Dijon, France, of course, I’m inclined to get to know any “Feb-Frosh.” There’s a special bond between the Dijon and Salamanca kids, regardless of grade. Tyler Cash: Epitome of Campus Celeb

By Eliza Appleton
April 28, 2011 - 8:24am

“T-Cashhh!” “Yo Ty!” “Tyler, waddup dude?” These are just some of the many things Tyler Cash hears as he walks around Colby’s campus. He, for lack of a better explanation, epitomizes the idea of a Colby campus celebrity. I’d say that out of a campus of roughly 1,900 students, at least 1,800 know Tyler Cash. And everyone who knows him loves him. READ MORE

Posse, plus: Omari Matthew Takes Leadership to a Whole New Level

By Ariella Gintzler
April 20, 2011 - 1:37pm

Omari Matthew is the epitome of celebrity. The list, alone, of all of his various
activities on campus would prove intimidating to most average Colby folk.  He is an aspiring president of the Taiko drumming club and vice-president of the Students Teaching About Equality and Peace. Did I mention he will also be a CA next year, and was recently in the process of creating an independent major? Yet, he takes the daily burden in stride. “I’m a Posse scholar. It is what is expected of us.”

Mike & Robb: 2 is Better Than 1

By Eliza Appleton
April 14, 2011 - 1:35am

I decided to make Mike M. and Robb A. campus celebrities because they are the self-proclaimed best-looking boys on campus. And who could argue with that? I think every Colby girl on campus should get to know both boys in depth. Sitting down in their crammed triple in East Quad on Mike aka Mastro’s twenty-first birthday, the two baseball stars stretch out across their beat up couches with several of their teammates—Bud Lights and 40s in hand (don’t worry, they’re both 21!). They find no shame in drinking during the week. It’s Monday Funday, right? But don’t be thrown off by their weekday tomfoolery—Mastro’s currently batting .333, and Robb’s hitting .342. That’s better than almost all of Major League Baseball. So as far as I’m concerned, they can keep doing...

Wristbands and Raffle Tickets: Kimiko Kossler Takes Matters into Her Own Hands

By Ariella Gintzler
April 8, 2011 - 4:22pm

There are 6762 miles separating Waterville, Maine from Japan. A plane ride to go visit would be roughly 12 hours long. The time difference is 13 hours. Yet for California native Kimiko Kossler, the recent earthquake hit all too close to home. She has helped create “Colby Loves Japan,” a campaign to raise money for the Japanese Red Cross Society.
