5 Ways to Make Your Dorm Room Feel Like Home

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Colby chapter.

As we all know, decorating your dorm room can turn into a real chore.  It can be hard to make your small space feel like home with so many restrictions.  With the cold weather approaching, we’ll all be spending more time holed up in our rooms so it’s important that your dorm room feels like home.  Here are a few tips and tricks to beautify your dorm room:

Flowers – While it can be a bit pricey to buy new flowers when they die, flowers are a small touch that make a big difference.  They also have the added bonus of a fresh scent!  If you don’t want to bust your budget, try finding some nice faux flowers.

Rugs – A rug will not only jazz up a bland space by adding a splash of color, but it can also warm up your cold winter feet.  After all, who likes to get out of bed in the morning to an ice cold floor. Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, and Rugs Direct offer great selections at a range of price points.

Curtains – Curtains are surprisingly easy to install and cause no dorm damage when hung on a tension rod.  Curtains can add a homey feel to your dorm room and turn your windows into a decorative piece.  You can even put up curtains in your armoire for decoration and to conceal a cluttered or messy closet. Check out these great options from Target and Pottery Barn Teen

Lamps and string lights – Lamps and string lights are great if you hate the fluorescent lighting in your dorm room.  They radiate a much softer light and come in all different shapes and colors to match the décor of your room.  String lights also give your room a more festive feel.

Picture Frames – Picture frames are a chic alternative to decorating your wall with posters.  You can buy different bright patterned frames to add a pop of color to the plain, white walls.  If you want to save a few bucks, you can buy patterned paper at a scrapbooking/crafts store or on etsy to mount your pictures on.  They will look like frames but won’t cost you a fortune!
