10 Jan Plan Essentials that Every Girl Needs

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Colby chapter.

Does Jan Plan weather make you wish you’d gone to a warm, southern school? Are dry skin and freezing temperatures making you wonder if going to school in Maine was worth it? Come on, Maine and this beautiful landscape is totally worth it! But here are my top ten skin, hair, and clothing essentials to combat the cold, dry weather while still looking as cute and alive as ever.

Moisturizer

Moisturize everywhere: your face, arms, legs, etc. Part of the reason skin becomes so dry in the winter is because we go from freezing temperatures outside to dry, heated rooms inside. College heaters produce pretty dry heat, but rather than splurging on a humidifier, try changing up your moisturizer to something more heavy-duty like a heavy Eucerin cream or a body butter. Don’t forget to try and find one with SPF! Just because you’re not getting tan doesn’t mean your skin shouldn’t be protected! Currently, I’m loving Say Yes to Cucumbers Daily Calming Moisturizer and Trader Joe’s Coconut Body Butter.

Leave-in Conditioner

Is winter frizz bumming you out? Invest in a leave-in conditioner or a hair oil, like Argan Oil or Moroccan oil smooth things out.

Chap Stick

Dry, chapped lips are no fun for anyone. Beat them with an ultra-hydrating lip balm. You can’t go wrong with classic Burts Bees.

Sweaters

A cute cowl-neck sweater warms you and keeps your neck super warm. These easy-to-wear sweaters make your outfit look cute and totally effortless (the best part is, it basically is effortless!) If you’re having trouble finding a cute cowl-neck, Old Navy’s got some great options for less than $20!

Super cozy scarf

All types of giant scarves are super in in the winter time, but a cute new trend this season is the faux-fur scarf. Just like a cowl-neck, it’ll keep you crazy warm and complete any outfit. Don’t want to spend a lot of money on a trendy item? Try this faux-fur infinity scarf from Forever 21. I have a similar one, and I’m totally obsessed.

Wool socks

One of the quickest ways to stay warm is to invest in a pair of great socks! Try these adorable L.L. Bean Wool Ragg Socks. They’re super comfy and super cute!

Fleece-lined Leggings

Who doesn’t want a pair? Check out Lululemon and L.L. Bean for some great pairs that will last you forever!

Warm Boots

Let’s be real, there’s too much snow not to have a good pair of warm, waterproof boots. Invest in some classic Bean Boots – they’ll keep your feet warm and dry, and you could almost say that they’re cute!

Flannels

We’re in Maine – it’s time to give in and buy some more flannels. Head over to L.L. Bean to shop their infamous plaids!

And last but definitely most essential, a SUPER WARM JACKET.

A warm jacket is the #1 essential when living in Maine. Mine is from L.L. Bean. It’s fluffy and warm and I wouldn’t be able to survive without it. Don’t be afraid to splurge on this item – it’ll last you a long time and you definitely need it.
