For When You Don’t Know What You’re Doing With Your Life

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CNU chapter.

When I first came to college I thought I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I had my major, grad school plan, and career all figured out. I was going to major in Psychology, get my Masters in Education, and be an elementary school teacher. Done. Then I spent a summer as a camp counselor and decided that while I love kids and do enjoy working with them, I didn’t see myself doing it as a career for the rest of my life. So that changed. Then I thought “Fine, I’ll still major in psychology and just figure something else out.” And then I transferred schools. Another wrench in the plan. Then I felt myself losing my fire for psychology. I still found it fascinating, but I just wasn’t enjoying studying it anymore. I did, however, find myself loving my communication classes. So I decided, hey, let’s change my major. Then I thought I wanted to be a lawyer so I added a law minor, then I started taking law classes and realized that’s not what I want either. So now here I am, in the middle of my junior year. Still a Comm major, because Comm is dope, but also because its too late to change my major if I want to graduate on time. Now I’ve added a psychology minor and after I graduate I’m planning on getting an associates degree in veterinary technology and being a vet nurse.

My point in giving you my whole life story is that it’s okay to not know what you want to do, and it’s okay to change your mind a million times — I know I sure have. College is all about finding yourself and learning what you like and discovering what you want out of life. Some people don’t even figure it out until even later on in life and that’s cool too! The point is, explore what you like, take classes that are interesting to you, and not because everyone else is taking them or says to take them, and don’t be discouraged if you feel a little lost. You’ll find your calling and everything will work out… at least, that’s what they tell me. None of us really know what we’re doing, but it’ll be ok.

I'm a junior at CNU majoring in communication studies and minoring in psychology. I spend most of my time in the library or binge-watching somethng on netflix. I enjoy the outdoors, a good cup of coffee, taking care of animals and the environment, and writing articles about topics that matter to me. Enjoy!
