When you tell someone that you’re an English major, they usually reply with “Oh! You want to teach?” As an English major, I can definitely attest to this. But the reason for this is simply because most people don’t realize the endless amount of opportunities and job options there really are for somebody acquiring an English degree. Teaching is a wonderful career choice and many English majors do end up teaching, but it isn’t the only choice If you are a fellow English major and have absolutely no idea what you plan to do after you graduate, welcome to the club. But some good news is that, with a little research, you’ll find your niche in no time! Here are a few careers to consider if you’re still unsure as to what you’d like to do after graduation.
Magazine Journalist
What to Expect: As a Magazine Journalist you will be expected to go out and research different topics, stories, and current events and write about them. Interviews may also be required for some articles. You must keep up to date with trends and be able to generate interesting and relevant ideas for articles. You may also take part in the process of publication as well, which requires great editing skills.
Salary: Approximately $39,733.
Web Content Manager
What to Expect: Web Content Managers are required to check the accuracy of the content on a web page, as well as maintain a well-structured website. You will also be in charge of producing a content schedule for the writers in order to maintain a consistent flow of new content. Because you will be the one managing the flow of the website, you will be required to conduct content audits which help identify any gaps in the content of the website so that the site achieves its full potential.
Salary: Approximately $56,012.
Copy Editor
What to Expect: As a Copy Editor, you will be proofreading and editing a range of publications, including books, newspapers, websites, and articles. Along with making sure the content is grammatically correct, you will also be accountable for checking the credibility of the text as well as ensuring that any photos that are referred to in the text are cited correctly. You may also be required to help writers with their research and help contact sources for interviews.
Salary: Approximately $43,898.
Public Relations (PR) Manager
What to Expect: A PR Manager’s main duty is to manage and maintain a client’s reputation. With that comes writing press releases, speeches, and articles as well as coordinating press conferences for clients. You will also be in charge of directing your client’s social media teams, finding sponsorship opportunities for your client, and building business relationships to expand awareness of your client’s company or organization.
Salary: Approximately $63,170
