Valentine’s Day for the Single Girl

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CMU chapter.

February 14th is the perfect day gushy and romantic with your significant other. But what if you’re flying solo on this oh-so-romantic day? It might be tempting to sit around, do homework, and pretend the world doesn’t exist. But why should you miss out? It turns out there are a TON of things you can do on Valentine’s Day in Pittsburgh if you’re single and ready to mingle. Why have a formal dinner with flowers and chocolate when you could have underwear, lasagna, mating animals, and Netflix instead? Read on to find out how you, a single woman, can have a blast on Valentine’s Day.

Cupid’s Undie Run – Cupid’s Undie Run is a mile run in your bedroom-best on Valentine’s weekend. The event raises money for the Children’s Tumor Foundation. Festivities start at noon on the day of the race and end with post-race festivities and awards. Prizes include undies and socks, an open bar, embroidered bathrobes, Timbuk2 messenger bags or backpacks, and Patagonia jackets. Check out the event here!

See a movie with friends. Who needs a boyfriend when you can go to the movies with friends and eat a ton of greasy popcorn? Sure there’ll be lots of lovey-dovey couples there, but that just gives you more targets to throw candy at! Best of all, the film How to Be Single premiers on February 12th! It stars Rebel Wilson and Dakota Johnson and it’s sure to be a hit.

Indulge in a romantically delicious dinner. Going on a Valentine’s Day date with a boy most likely means you have to be prim and polite, and probably order a salad. Instead, hit up a place like the Cheesecake Factory for a delicious piece of cheesecake, or Buca Di Beppo for heart-shaped lasagna.

Send Valentine’s Day cards. Who says you have to send romantic cards on Valentine’s Day? Sigma Tau Delta, CMU’s English honors society, is selling customized Valentine’s Day poems! You’ll receive a custom-written poem of 5-7 lines on a decorative card. Best of all, the form allows you to choose what type of poem you want (romantic, friendly, or humorous) and specify keywords so you’ll get exactly what you ask for. Check out the event and sign up here!

Animal Instincts: Valentine’s Dinner at the Pittsburgh Zoo. The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium is hosting a special Valentine’s dinner on February 14th and 15th with hors d’oeuvres, an open bar with cocktails, a formal dinner, dessert, an adults-only presentation by Henry Kacprzyk, who will reveal the intimate secrets of exotic animal mating, and a special Water’s Edge animal event. Check it out here!

Eat a tub of ice-cream and watch romantic movies. Who says you have to spend V-Day with anyone at all? If you’re feeling particularly solitary, buy a tub of your favorite ice-cream, curl up on the couch and binge-watch your favorite Netflix episodes late into the night. Don’t worry, you’ll eventually crash after your sugar high and fall into a sweet and satisfying sleep.

I am currently senior majoring in Business Administration and Statistics with a track in Finance at Carnegie Mellon University. Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Enid Blyton and J.K Rowling are a few of my favorite authors. I also love watching British TV shows (Sherlock is my favorite!). On campus, I am involved in several activities, including Carnegie Mellon Business Association and Smart Woman Securities.
