Every Carnegie Mellon student probably had that confused look on their face when they first discovered that “Tartan” was our school’s signature color. Don’t deny it – the “color” is a little offbeat, but it’s just one of the things that makes Carnegie Mellon so unique. And, in this case, it does us a little fashion favor! Plaid is the perfect way to spice up your wardrobe. Whether it’s the centerpiece of your outfit or just thrown on as an accessory, plaid pieces can bring color and fun to your outfit. If you’re as Tartan obsessed as the rest of this school, try some of these exciting spins on the classic pattern this fall:
Scarves
The days of summer are quickly coming to a close and it’s starting to get chilly out, so bundle yourself up in a cute tartan scarf! The accessory can be easily added on top of any jacket or paired with a cardigan and jeans for an all-day look!
Bags
One of the easiest ways to incorporate plaid into your wardrobe is with a tartan bag or purse, like this one from ModCloth. Could there be a cuter way to lug your books around campus?
Shoes
Want a subtle touch of plaid? Try starting with your shoes! Combat boots (another Fall favorite of mine) with a little plaid accent have become extremely popular this season. Or maybe add some flair with a pair of plaid flats!
Dresses
For the lover of Tartan, go all out with a dress covered in the pattern. This look can be super casual, so it’s perfect for walking around campus on a nice fall day (I do believe Pittsburgh has a few of those)!
Shirt
Any true Tartan girl is bound to have this staple lying around in their closet, so if all else fails stick to the classic plaid look! This comfy essential is perfect with a pair of jeans, but has so many different looks: Try tying it around your waist or layering it over a pretty dress!
Now go show off your Tartan pride!
