The Dos and Don’ts of Cooler Painting

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Clemson chapter.

Honestly, universities should just start offering “cooler painting” courses to every school in the south! BUT since that’s not option, this is all about the good and not so good ideas to painting coolers. So ladies, pay attention!

The Basics: Pick it, sand it, prime it, paint it, fill it!

DO:

– Plan what you’re going to do ahead of time! If you don’t that cooler could become a hot mess real quick!

-Take handles, wheels, and grooves into consideration. They can get in the way of painting sometimes!

-Use heavy grit sand paper to get the finish and then fine grit to smooth it out.

-Make sure you use a sealer; you want to ensure the paint stays on nice!

-Take into account your date’s interests and what he likes. He’s going to be the one keeping it!

– Start with plenty of time to spare.

-Paint it with friends who have their own to do or other girls going and blast some music to make it more enjoyable. Plus it’s good bonding time!

-Be creative! Make it personal!

– Use graphite paper to transfer images onto the cooler, makes it easier but not too messy!

-Check Pinterest for ideas and The Cooler Connection on Facebook too!

-Have fun!

DON’T:

-Pay someone to paint it. It won’t mean as much and you wouldn’t get the same experience.

-Paint the inside, unless it’s a few words or something like that with a paint pen.

-Worry that he’ll hate it! If your date knows you put the time and effort in, he’ll be happy with it or at least nice about it if he’s not…too bad for him.

-Spell your date’s name wrong, yes that’s happened!

-Overload the cooler with so many prints and designs that you can’t really tell what’s going on.

-Going off the one from above, don’t just plaster every Southern brand emblem on it. Seriously, be creative!

– Show him the cooler until you’re completely finished. The element of surprise is always more fun!

– Stress yourself out to the max over it! Let’s be real, it is just a cooler.

-Don’t forget to fill it up! Obviously he’s going to expect alcohol in there, but maybe add his favorite candy too as a sweet surprise!

Lost as it to what to draw? Follow this formula:

– One side, his drink of choice but label his name instead of the beverage name

– One side, the function you are being invited to with his fraternity name (example a picture of a beach for formal/beachweekend with XYZ listed)

– One side, encompass Clemson. Or if it’s another school’s function list that school or even try a Pro Team if he is a huge fan.

– One Side, something around one of his hobbies; fishing, golf, drinking, music, etc.

–  The “fun side” try drawing an E-card or write a funny phrase, easy and never fails.
