In case you missed it, #Beychella, I mean Coachella is more iconic than ever with amazing performances from Cardi B, the Weeknd, Anime, and many others…including the most talked about performance: Beyonce. If you have the time to watch the two-hour performance I highly recommend.

However, this performance was not only amazing because of her beautiful singing, creative dancing, and tributes to every stage of her career, but she was able to celebrate black culture during a time where others aren’t doing so. By featuring an HBCU-style marching band and majorette dance team, paying tribute to Nina Simone, featuring words from Malcolm X, singing her version of the Black National Anthem “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” and having her own version of Black Greek life (BΔK), everyone at Coachella and online live viewers are taking a trip through black history through her performance.

Bey was also able to shock the audience with surprise guest appearances from dancing sensations Les Twins, the other two Destiny’s Child members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, her sister Solange Knowles, and her husband Jay-Z.

It was a two-hour dance party, non-stop karaoke machine, and something that everyone watching could appreciate. I think it’s safe to say that the first black female headliner at Coachella set the bar extremely high for every performer that has to follow.

However, Beyonce was not the only performer at Coachella. After releasing her latest album “Invasion of Privacy” and announcing her pregnancy, Cardi B hit the stage showing off her baby bump and performing as if it wasn’t there, while paying tribute to TLC’s Left Eye through her wardrobe. Cardi B had her own guest performers including 21 Savage, YG, Chance the Rapper, and Kehlani.

Also singer of famous song “Caroline,” Anime made waves of his own when he altered some of the lyrics to his song to send a message to all of his non-black listeners. Where his lyrics normally say “killa, westside n***a,” he added to it by telling his heavily white audience, “killa, if you ain’t black don’t say it n***a.”

Whether you were getting culturally shocked by Anime, singing to Beyonce, or twerking with Cardi, Coachella had a little something to offer for all of its attendees and will be trending on Twitter for the next few weeks.

I am a junior Packaging Science major attending Clemson University. I am from Greenville, South Carolina. In my spare time, I enjoy going out with my family and friends, watching movies, and taking road trips. I hope to be the voice for someone that may be too afraid to speak for themselves. Joining Her Campus is a large step in that direction.
