Anna Marie Davis: Painting With Purpose

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Clemson chapter.

Anna is a sophomore, Visual Arts major that enjoys painting and has recently begun painting and selling water colored painted lockets. In our interview she gave me insight on her inspiration, the designs and much more. Check out our interview below!

What inspired you to start selling your jewelry?

Anna: It started out as me just making them to give gifts to close friends. I wanted to give them something from me since I paint and am an art major and they know this about me. After seeing how much they loved them I got the idea to make and sell them.

What is your favorite part about making them?

Anna: The fact that other people enjoy them and get so excited about the fact that they get to wear an actual painting of mine.

Why did you choose flowers and what is the meaning behind each design?

Anna: Flowers are feminine and my goal was to bridge the gap between being feminine and nature. I also wanted to choose something that connected flowers with strong women figures in the Bible.

The Elizabeth necklace is of a Mum flower and is based on the scripture Luke 1:36

“And Behold, you relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren.”

The Ruth necklace is of a Sunflower and is based on the scripture Ruth 1:16

“But Ruth said: Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge, I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God shall be my God.”

The Naomi necklace is of a Petunia and is based on the scripture Ruth 1:12

“Turn back, my daughters; go your way, for I am too old to have s husband. If I should stay I have hope, even if I should have a husband this night and should bear sons.”

In your opinion, what do all these women have in common that makes them strong women figures?

Anna: I believe they all lived out God’s full intention for His creation of women. For example, Ruth was very submissive in her respect for her loved ones and how she respected other people. Elizabeth was a very faithful woman to the Lord even though she couldn’t have the one thing she wanted, which was to have a child. But then she was extremely thankful when she eventually did have a child and remained faithful. Naomi was very accepting of what she thought was a punishment from God because she was aware of her wrongdoings but she stayed loving and faithful during the rest of her life, no matter what she went through.

What would be your hope for every young woman that wears your jewelry?

Anna: My hope is that they will not just buy the necklace for is beauty, but wear it for the meaning. I hope they would wear it as if they were trying to live out their lives in a similar way that Ruth, Naomi, and Elizabeth did: graciously and for the Lord!
