7 Unique Ways to Reduce Stress this Month
With exams quickly approaching, many college students are finding themselves
feeling overwhelmed and stressed. Generally, college students cope with stress by
“going out” every weekend. What if you’re tired of the routine and want to mix
things up? How can you reduce the stress without losing any of the fun?
1. Go on a hike
An adventure in the mountains may be just what you need to
ease your stress as the exam season rapidly approaches. South Carolina is
well known for its countless hiking trails that even beginners can tackle.
From Issaqueena Falls and Yellow Branch in Walhalla, SC to trails at the
Oconee State Park in Mountain Rest or the Table Rock State Park in Pickens
County, the options are endless. Hiking is the perfect afternoon excursion,
just grab a friend and some snacks and enjoy a relaxing day reconnecting
with nature.
2. Go dancing
Whether it be contra, swing, or shag, dancing is a great way to
reduce stress by tricking yourself into exercising. Throw on a cute dress and
your dancing shoes and select your dance style of choice. Some locations hold
dances on a regular basis; you just need to do a little digging. Beginners are
welcomed with open arms and learning the ropes is a breeze.
3. Be a kid
Grab a group of friends and spend the evening playing laser tag or
riding go-karts at Sweet Retreats in Walhalla or roller-skating at Skateland in
Anderson. Time away from the college culture helps you relax as well as take
a break from your routine.
4. Take up a new hobby
Whether it be joining – and actively participating – in
a school club, learning a new sport, or crafting with your roommate, a new
hobby can be just what you need to take your mind off of exams. For once,
instead of binge watching Netflix, learn something new and share your
experience with a pal.
5. Listen to local music
Whether it be simply supporting local musicians via
Youtube, Spotify, or SoundCloud or spending the evening at Moe Joe’s
listening to some live tunes, you can never go wrong with local music.
Research locations that your favorite musicians are coming to soon and
support those kids!
6. Bake
If you have access to a kitchen, which most students do – even those
in residence halls, treat yourself by baking something delicious and then
share it with your friends. Baking in and of itself can be therapeutic, but it’s
also a great way to connect with other people on your hall.
7. Read a book
There is nothing more stress relieving than getting lost in a
book. Set aside some time to finally read that novel you’ve been pushing to
the side for the past couple of weeks. Reread an old favorite or dive into a
new series, whatever you choose, reading will stimulate your mind and
reduce stress!
