5 Tips When in a Long-Distance Relationship

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Clemson chapter.

1)    Communicate

This is the most important thing to keep in mind. Communication really is key. Whether it’s a long-distance relationship where she/he is down the road, or across the world, find ways to stay in constant communication. We live in a wonderful age where we can contact someone with a touch of a button, so there’s no excuse to not communicate.

2)    See Each Other as Much as Possible

I know this isn’t an option for all LD couples. Personally, my boyfriend lives in Germany, so seeing him often isn’t a reality. However, we can still see each other through apps like FaceTime and Skype. I can’t express how much better it is to talk to your significant other when you can see their face and read their body language. If you’re lucky enough to have your boyfriend/girlfriend close by, make it a point to meet on the weekends, or do a small adventurous trip together once a month. Split the drive and meet in the middle!

3)    Compromise

Even though y’all don’t see each other often, there are still compromises to be made. Both you and your significant other need to keep an open mind when spending time together. If you do meet with each other, y’all need to agree on what you’ll be doing with that period of time. Whether it’s going on an adventure, hanging out with friends, or Netflix and Chilling, y’all need to be in agreement.

4)    Keep the Romance

In most LD relationships, romance can be easily lost. You both get caught up in the excitement of your own life that you forget an anniversary or a good morning message. It’s an easy thing to do, but there are ways to keep the romance alive. A handwritten letter can mean the world to someone, or a bouquet of flowers will put a smile on their face that will last the rest of the day. Random “I love you” messages are an amazing way to let your significant other know you are constantly thinking about them. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, go to their city/town and surprise them!

5)    Look Towards the Future

Keep in mind the goal of your relationship. You both clearly love each other enough to brave the bitch that is long distance, so remind yourself of that. You’re doing this because you love them. Great ways to continue looking to the future is getting a Countdown app and countdown until you see your love again. Another great comfort is talking to each other about the life you’ll have together when they return. Whether that be marriage, moving in together, or simply going on more dates, it’s comforting to think about the results of all the hard work and sacrifices that both of you have made.
