Four Dorm Decorating Tips

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Clark chapter.

Whether is this your first year of college or you last, there’s something so excited about decorating a new dorm.  It’s a blank canvas ready for you to design!  I have changed up my décor quite a bit from freshman year to now- without breaking the bank!  I have kept the same staple elements like lights and blankets, but added smaller pieces to give my style a new feel. These are my top tips for decorating your dorm without breaking your budget!

1. String Lights

I know this is really cliché, but string lights really do add a lot to a space.  I personally hate the florescent overhead lights in all the dorms, so I always have used string lights in my rooms.  You can even buy string lights in fun colors and shapes now!  They’re an awesome way to brighten up your space.

2. Tapestries

I bought a tapestry for my dorm my sophomore year and never looked back!  Mine was only 15 dollars on Amazon and takes up my whole wall!  Tapestries add a nice pop of color to any room!  There are so many different styles so you can choose one that suits your dorm.

3. Photographs

Putting pictures on the wall in fun designs or shapes serves two purposes: 1) it adds to your room decor and 2) it helps you to look back on all your fun memories.  I have always had a mix of pictures from friends and family back home, as well as pictures of my college friends.  The pictures make me happy while still being decorative.

4. Shop Clearance Now

I happened to be at Kohl’s last week and all their college stuff was on clearance.  Everything from neon signs, to whiteboards, to mermaid pillows was 80% off!  Stores like Kohls, Bed Bath and Beyond, and more, always have large sections of college dorm supplies and décor.  I don’t like to pay full price for little cork boards and signs, so I will usually buy little things like that now while the store have them marked down!

Happy decorating, collegiettes!
