The 2018 Grammy nominations were released this week, and it wasn’t all that was expected.
Jay-Z leads the 60th annual Grammy Awards with eight nominations.
The leap of hip-hop in today’s world is evident through the nominations. Kanye West was the only hip-hop artist nominated (for album of the year) just a decade ago. The upcoming Grammy Awards is obviously going to be different.
Lots of the top songs today include a hip-hop or rap, so it would make sense that the genre gained more nominations this time around. Khalid, for example, is nominated for five Grammy Awards.
But artists were snubbed too. Ed Sheeran was not nominated for Album of the Year or Song of the Year. Katy Perry did not receive any nominations, which is against her streak thus far.
According to Rolling Stone, this year streaming service’s numbers were a factor. The Song, Record, and Album of the Year nominees all had streaming success this past year.
The Grammy Awards will be held January 28 in Madison Square Garden.
