My First Single Christmas

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Clarion chapter.

Whether it has been 10 years, or only 2, this is the first Christmas you are going through being single. Don’t despair. We have all been there at one point or another. I, myself, am single for the first time in 3 years… well scratch that, technically last Christmas I was single, but I completely forgot it was Christmas because I was on my way to my cruise to the Bahamas…. But that’s neither here nor there.

While we all wish we could jump on a cruise to the Bahamas, especially during Christmas time when you live in the north, we simply can’t. We have to suck it up and enjoy our Christmas!

Okay, I understand there are the cons to being single on Christmas. No cute Christmas pics, kiss under the mistletoe, extra presents to unwrap, and those pesky relatives asking where your ex is at or if you will be bringing a new significant other over for the holiday.  It is infuriating! I get it. But we have to look at the bright sides. Trust me, there are plenty!

1.       You don’t have to buy presents for your significant other (less stress + more money to spend on yourself $$$).

2.       You don’t have to buy presents for your (would have been) evil mother-in-law just to watch her fake smile and then set it to the side “for now” never to be seen again (think of the more money you get to spend on yourself instead of waste on her $$$$).

3.       You don’t have to buy any more presents for anybody else in their family (need I say it…$$$).

4.       You don’t have to see your significant other’s racist/sexist/bigoted extended family and be fake nice to them.

5.       You don’t have to eat their family’s terrible cooking.

6.       You don’t have to find a way to go to both your family’s and their family’s holiday celebrations both on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day (think of all the gas money you will spend).

7.       You get to finally spend Christmas with just your family! (You know you love them! Even though they get on your nerves and come with a bunch of their own problems)

8.       You can enjoy your own company (this one sounds slightly pathetic, but seriously, you are amazing and wonderful and so much fun to be around! Why not enjoy yourself)!

9.       If your family is laid back (let’s face it, even if they aren’t you can do whatever you want! You’re an adult now!), guess who gets to spend all day in their Christmas footy pajamas (YOU)!

10.   You can take all that extra money you saved on not buying other people presents and unwrap all the presents you bought for yourself (GO YOU!) …… or pay some bills and feel satisfied that that is one thing off your To-Do-List and it is a pathetic attempt at a Christmas present to yourself because adulting is hard…… but also…… TREAT YO SELF!

Those are just a few examples! I bet I got that ball rolling! Those wheels in your head are spinning! I’m certain you are already seeing the silver lining of being single this Christmas. So, enjoy it! Because you never know, next Christmas you might be locked down again and have to figure out what to get the new evil-future-mother-in-law for Christmas!
