Holiday Movies That Will Get You in the Spirit

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cincinnati chapter.

The Holidays are approaching and the semester is coming to an end, so you probably have a lot of free time. What should you do? Sit down with your favorite snack and binge watch my top 12 favorite Christmas movies to get in the holly jolly spirit.

Elf

This is the classic holiday comedy about a human who grew up as one of Santa’s elves and travels to New York City in search of his father; who just so happens to be on the naughty list. I enjoy this movie because it’s a classic that brings back memories from my childhood.

Home Alone

Another classic about a boy who is left at home while his family leaves for vacation. This movie follows his adventures and mishaps as he protects his house from burglars.Home Alone caused a lot of mischief in my childhood and also gave me a little bit of anxiety about being left home alone for fear that burglars were going to steal my family’s belongings. Another very original classic film that I love watching every year. The Nightmare Before Christmas

Jack Skellington, the king of Halloween Town becomes bored with doing the same traditions during Halloween time. He stumbles upon Christmas Town and has an idea to have a Christmas celebration in his town. However, the resident monsters have some trouble with this idea. This movie terrified me as a child, and it took me until freshman year of college to finally watch it, and I can say it’s very catchy as it’s part musical.

The Santa Clause Movies

This trilogy follows a not so family man who one day happens to put on Santa’s coat and magically turns into Santa Clause. He learns much more about life and family throughout the series. It’s one of my all-time favorite movies EVER for some odd reason. I remember watching every movie all the time as a kid, as I just thought it was magical that anybody could be a Santa. The Grinch

The Grinch is a Whoville outsider who does not participate in any Who activities. This all starts to change when he meets a young girl who shows him the true meaning of Christmas. This is one of my family’s favorite movie; it is oddly relatable and heartwarming.

Four Christmases

A couple has been together for three years and has no intention of marriage or children. When they head out for Fiji on Christmas morning, their plan goes array. They end up having to visit each of their divorced parents for Christmas. I devote my life to terrible Christmas rom-coms and this is one of the few I actually enjoyed.

Love Actually

This movie follows the lives of eight couples who are all going through different life adventures a month before Christmas. An “actually” good rom-com that is one of my favorite movies EVER. It is thoughtfully played out and isn’t too cliché.A Christmas Story

Ralphie attempts to convince his parents that a Red Ryder B.B Gun is the perfect Christmas gift. This is another childhood classic movie that I watch every year.

Sleepless in Seattle

A man’s wife passes away, and his child calls a radio talk show about how perfect the two were. Women fall in love with the story and reach out to the man in hopes of having the same love. I am so obsessed with sappy rom-coms and this one takes the cake for cutest rom-com.

Just Friends

Ryan Reynolds stars as a music producer who gets stuck in New Jersey during the Holidays with his ex-fling and best friend, and a crazy celebrity. Anna Faris also stars in this movie. It’s not the best movie ever, but definitely one of the best worst rom-com Holiday movies. This has Chubby Ryan Reynolds in it which makes things entertaining.Krampus

This movie follows German Folklore of Krampus, the negative spirit of Christmas who punishes non-believers. These are my two favorite things; horror movies and Christmas all combined into one movie. This is honestly a masterpiece. A must see for all viewers. The Children

Two Families visit a remote country house during the holidays. The children eventually become sick with one major side effect- Crazy Killers. This was one of the first scary movies I have ever seen and is part of the reason why I never want to have kids. I also love the mash-up of happy holidays and horror.
