What is Business Casual?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chatham chapter.

For most of us, college is one of the first (if not the first) times we start hearing about the dreaded “Business Casual” attire. Sometimes it is a requirement for school, but sometimes it is essential for getting into your work field.

But what does it mean? High school is primarily a casual time, dressing nice on an occasion.  Then all of a sudden we are told we must dress a certain and prestigious way. How does one decode the system?

Here is the general rule of thumb: Wear what you would wear as a professional in the working world, typically the office and/or white-collar apparel. For starters: skirts or nice pants (not jeans), a nice blouse or sweater, and functional yet stylish shoes are basic guidelines. If you would like to take it a step further and go business formal, typically for an interview or big meeting, you take it up a notch. Business formal is not day-to-day attire—it is usually for when you really want to “dress to impress.” A suit is appropriate for times like this. A pant/skirt suit, stockings or tights, and sensible shoes is the general definition for going above and beyond.

Now, when I say sensible or functional shoes, I do not mean tennis shoes or converse. A little heel is always nice, but not your “going out to the club, sky high heels.” If you do not own or are not comfortable with short heels, flats do a lovely job. Flats are also, sometimes, more comfortable.

Hopefully this can give you some good starting ideas for your journey into the professional world. If you need some help styling an outfit, try White House Black Market. It is a lovely store with very helpful sales associates. They can help you decide what you need and what works for you. Bonus: there is usually a clearance rack!
