Everyone has one: the morning routine. Get up, shower, deodorant, makeup, style hair, brush teeth, out the door.  But have you ever wondered what’s in your products? Your beauty regimen might actually be killing you softly. Harmful toxins (often found in the fine print under the ingredients label) have been linked to reproductive issues, extensive allergies, and even cancer. So how can you be sure your beauty remains skin deep? Check out EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database. The makers of the website rate the toxicity of each ingredient of a product and then average the toxicities to give it an overall number. This sustainability blogger checked her own makeup against the system; see if your situation is similar!

Cosmetics:

  1. Eyeliner: Rating on the toxicity scale: 4
  2. Mascara: Rating on the toxicity scale: 6

Soaps, Deodorant, Lotion:

  1. Soap Bar: Rating on the toxicity scale: 3
  2. Shampoo & Conditioner: Rating on the toxicity scale: 5
  3.  Anti-Perspirant: Rating on the toxicity scale: 4
  4. Lotion: Rating on the toxicity scale: 9

Other:

  1. Toothpaste: Rating on the toxicity scale: 4

I searched the products that I use on a daily basis. While the toxicity rating on the amount of data collected from each product (ranging from limited to fair to moderate to robust) varies, the essentials are still the same; the harmful, nasty, carcinogenic ingredients are on display for the whole world to see.  What’s amazing is that the website will list what ingredient is the most toxic and what it has been linked to health-wise. So ladies, please be careful with your beauty regimen. Check out ewg.org now and take care of your body!
