Julia Nunes Will Be Your New Crush (And She’s Coming to Campus)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chatham chapter.

Julia Nunes is an independent singer-songwriter, and her signature instrument is the ukulele. Many of her songs are about romantic relationships, and others address mental health. In essence, she is what I aspire to be as an artist. She is also, as our editor Indigo Baloch put it, “a BABE.” Best of all, she will be performing in Eddy Theatre on January 18th at 7:00 pm, with doors at 6:30 pm.

Nunes first found fame through YouTube, where she still has hundreds of thousands of subscribers and is celebrating the ten year anniversary of her channel. Though she has removed some of her older videos, she still updates her channel with her original songs, covers, some behind the scenes videos, and vlogs.

In between posts about her music and performances, Nunes has used social media to support causes such as the movement to protect the Standing Rock Reservation.

In 2015, she released her latest album, Some Feelings, which featured the wonderful single “Make Out.” My friend actually introduced me to this song last year, with its Jam in a Van version, one of her many Kickstarter funded promotional stops for the album.

The official music video for “Make Out” features couples of all kinds, which happen to be her friends that could be involved on short notice. Nunes and her partner Dannielle Owens-Reid, co-founder of Everyone Is Gay, are also featured in the video.

Nunes currently has an active Kickstarter campaign to create a new album, and she has already surpassed her fundraising goal as she has in her past campaigns too. The album is planned for release early 2018.

Nunes is currently on a living room tour across the East Coast, and we are the only university that will be hosting her for this tour. We are very lucky as she will also be holding a Q&A and sticking around after to meet everyone.

Funding and support provided by Chatham Student Government, Student Activities, and The Women’s Institute. This concert is a collaboration of Chatham’s Ukulele Club, Queer Straight Alliance, Music Club, and us here at Her Campus.
