Thanksgiving Reflection: HC Chatham News/Lifestyle Section Editor Gretchen GeibelBy November 12, 2012 - 10:37pm My favorite thing about Thanksgiving (although it's kind of cliché) is being able to come together with all of my family. My parents have upwards of seven siblings each, so get togethers with everyone are hard to come by. Nonetheless, Thanksgiving is the one holiday where both sides of my family are able to come together to share our thanks as well as each other's company. Having such a large family means that Thanksgivings are always big, loud, and a little crazy...but they're so much more fun for that reason! Plus, my family always goes to both my mom's and my dad's family's celebrations...and I'm never going to complain about getting two Thanksgiving dinners!... |

Thanksgiving Reflection: HC Chatham Writer Julie VictainBy November 10, 2012 - 11:44pm Each day leading up to Thanksgiving, we'll feature a reflection on the holiday by a Chatham student. HC Chatham Writer Julie Victain: "My favorite thing/memory about Thanksgiving was waking up super early to watch the parades in the morning. Then my Grandma, Mom, sisters, and I would work on dinner. After all of my family came over and ate, we would go to a local light display (Hartwood Acres) and we would drive through blasting Christmas music. Singing at the top of our lungs, we would come home with crackling voices and watching Christmas movies until we fell asleep. Then we would go shopping on Black Friday (my real favorite holiday)." Healthy Eating: A Guide to Portion SizesBy October 13, 2012 - 11:11pm What frustrates many women about their weight is how easy it is to put it on and how hard it is to lose. What many women fail to realize is that it’s not only the kinds of food they are eating that cause them to struggle with weight loss, but it is also the portion sizes. A portion is the amount of food that you choose to eat at one time. In a world where “bigger is better,” it can be hard to distinguish a regular, everyday portion size from a healthy one. Over the decades, portion sizes have steadily increased; for example, bagels used to be about 3 inches in diameter and about 140 calories; now they are 6 inches in diameter and 350 calories. More specifically, the bread/carb/diet killer aisle. But with so many people advocating for the healthy effects of whole grains, what’s the deal? Here’s everything you ever wanted to know about them.
