15 Ways Chapman Promotes Sustainability

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapman chapter.

1. Water Bottle Refilling Stations: Save plastic and money by using a refillable water bottle instead of plastic water bottles.

2. Solar Trash Compactors: There are now 22 of these Big Belly Solar Trash Compactors on campus. These compactors send an email to the custodians when they are full (super high tech) and only need to be emptied about 1.3 times a week. This saves the custodial staff time for other projects.

3. Mission Environment Club: The Mission Environment club’s main goal is to implement more sustainable practices on campus. One of their major contributions is holding events during earth week. Join the club to get involved and learn about Chapman’s sustainability efforts!

4. The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF): TGIF accepts applications for sustainable project ideas to recieve funding!

5. Drought Awareness Posters: These are located all around campus.

6. Carpool Hangtags: Carpool hangtags make parking on campus cheaper, while also clearing up the parking lots!

7. Community Garden: The community garden is located in the Davis Quad and is open to Chapman students and faculty members.

8. Electric Vehicle Charging Stations: Chapman has eight electric vehicle charging stations on campus.

9. Meatless Monday Pledge: Take the Meatless Monday pledge on Chapman’s website and you will be entered into a raffle to receive prizes!

10. Bike Voucher Program: This program gives students a voucher for local bike shops in exchange for their parking pass/parking privilege on campus.

11. Sustainability Blog: Visit the Chapman sustainability blog for updates on the latest in sustainability initiatives on campus. Click here: http://blogs.chapman.edu/sustainability/

12. Double Sided Printers: Beginning in the spring, most printers on campus will automatically print double-sided papers.

13. Henley Eco-fit Gym: The gym in Henley basement contains SportsArt equipment that allows you to workout and produce electricity at the same time (shout out to Henley for being the best dorm!).

14. Weigh the Waste: Many of you probably remember dumping your leftovers into bins at the caf. This program takes place monthly in the dining hall and aims to educate students about waste reduction.

15. Ecolympics: The Eco-Olympics is coming to Chapman Residence Life for the first time this year. It is a competition among the residence halls to reduce water and energy consumption. The halls with the largest percent decrease in water and energy consumption will both win. There will also be prizes for individuals who attend events throughout the competition.
