Hungry for Hunger Games: The New Trilogy Sensation

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapel Hill chapter.

You have probably heard talk among friends or classmates about the book series that has sparked an addiction among girls and boys of all ages. Perhaps it’s been chatter about Team Peeta or Team Gale, Katniss, and mockingjays. Either way, if you’re not on the Hunger Games bandwagon, I strongly encourage you to spend your upcoming Saturday cozied up with a book … and prepare to spend the remainder of your weekend there.

I’m referring to The Hunger Games trilogy, written by Suzanne Collins, which was published in 2008. The Hunger Games takes place in a nation called Panem, which is a place of the future created after North America is destroyed. There are twelve districts in Panem and a Capitol, which controls the entire nation. The story focuses on Katniss Everdeen, a 16-year-old girl from District 12. Each year as a punishment for a previous revolt against the Capitol, one boy and one girl between ages 12 to 18 are selected to be a part of the Hunger Games. These games fight to the death in an outdoor arena until only one remains. Katniss ends up being a participant in the Hunger Games, along with another boy from her district, Peeta. I don’t want to give anything else away but the plot of adventure, love and pride literally makes these books unlike anything I’ve ever read.

“This is the first series since Harry Potter that I’ve been able to really get into,” said Caroline Jones, sophomore.

The books have been called “brilliantly plotted and perfectly paced” by The New York Times. Even Stephenie Meyer, who wrote the Twilight series said, “I was so obsessed with this book. … The Hunger Games is amazing.”

If you were slow on the Twilight or Harry Potter series then later regretted it when that was all any of your friends talked about, this is your chance to redeem yourself! Not to mention, the fact that the series is being made into a movie should give you an even greater incentive to start reading. The main character, Katniss, will be played by Jennifer Lawrence, with Josh Hutcherson (hot) as the role of Peeta, and Liam Hemsworth (super hot) as the role of Gale. Lenny Kravitz, Woody Harrelson and Elizabeth Banks also have major parts. The movie is anticipated to come out March 23, 2012 so GET READING.

You can buy The Hunger Games series for an awesome price of $31.00 on Amazon, rent them at a nearby library or borrow from a friend (I guarantee someone has read them).
