How To UNC: The HerCampus Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapel Hill chapter.

Dear Freshman,

HerCampus wants to personally welcome you to the best college ever, the one and only UNC-Chapel Hill. Besides the stellar academics, fantastic sports and beautiful campus – you are also just far enough away from the dark blue school down the road that you’ll practically forget it exists.

Around 98 percent of Carolina students even said they would choose UNC over Hogwarts (just kidding, that poll never happened but UNC is still the best school ever).

So now that you’ve gotten in, aced the SATs and are likely living in a teeny-tiny dorm room, you need to ensure that you do Carolina right. You need to make sure your college career isn’t like a scene from House Bunny, Legally Blonde or Project X (except for maybe once or twice).

Now, every freshman can thank HC because you can officially survive college with these 50 tips.

  1. DON’T wear your key around your neck on a lanyard.
  2. Avoid carrying a map.
  3. Go to class.
  4. And be on time.
  5. Try a cinnamon sugar bagel from Alpine.
  6. Take professors, not classes (see blinkness.com).
  7. Avoid taking 2 p.m. Friday classes.
  8. Paint up at least once for a football game.
  9. If you don’t get in the basketball lottery, just go the Student Union 24 hours before – they give away extra tickets.
  10. Raise your hand in class.
  11. But not too much.
  12. Venture to Carrboro – they have cool art.
  13. Get all free food on campus from freefood.org
  14. Always submit Kvetches.
  15. Take advantage of all the amazing speakers and performers.
  16. Despite your early morning Wednesday classes, try to make it to Country Night at East End.
  17. Always hate Duke.
  18. Find “your’ study spot in the library.
  19. Join as many clubs as you can.
  20. The Library on Franklin Street is not actual library.
  21. Know that The Daily Grind is the best coffee on campus.
  22. Utilize UNC Alumni – they’ll get you internships.
  23. Collect your Yogurt Pump receipts like it’s your job.
  24. Run around the football stadium in the middle of the night.
  25. Tour the basketball museum.
  26. Always wear shower shoes.
  27. Save your blue cups from He’s Not, you’ll be thankful for the spare dishes one day.
  28. Jump into the fountain outside Bynum Circle.
  29. Go to Maple View Farms.
  30. Avoid the 8th floor of Davis Library if you are ACTUALLY trying to study (See Daily Tar Heel article)
  31. Drink out of the Old Well on the first day of class.
  32. Join a secret society.
  33. Beware of anything but the soft serve in dining halls.
  34. Watch sorority rush on Bid Day.
  35. Get in the risers for at least one basketball.
  36. Treat the Pit Preacher like window-shopping, look, but don’t buy it.
  37. Go to a women’s soccer game because they’re actually our best sport.
  38. Take a picture with Ramsey.
  39. Memorize your PID.
  40. Stock your wardrobe with Carolina blue.

  46. Loft your bed … it maximizes space.
  47. Join an intramural team.
  48. Climb to the top of the Bell Tower.
  49. Don’t transfer.
