A Talk With Miss Omega Psi Phi

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CAU chapter.

“The crown is always in your heart even when it is not on top of your head.” Words of wisdom from Regine Stepherson, Miss Omega Psi Phi 2017-2018, she is a junior, Mass Media Arts major with a concentration in Public Relations. Regine Stepherson is grounded, focused, and always carries herself like a queen. HerCampus caught up with her to talk about her new title and some of her goals for the future.

HC: How do you define yourself?

RS: If I were to define myself, I would honestly define myself as a queen. I always believe that I should uphold myself like I am royal, because I am royalty. That’s why I believe that the crown should always remain in your heart, even when it’s not on top of your head.

HC: Who are you inspired by?

RS: I’m inspired by my lovely residents. I’m a resident assistant in Merner Hall. These girls really push me to do better and when I do that, I push them to do better. So we kind of feed off of each other’s energy.

HC: Tell me a fun fact about you.

RS: A fun fact about me is that I’m really shy. Whenever I say I’m shy people don’t usually believe me. I always have positive energy when I go into a room so they think I’m so easy to get along with. But I really hate stepping out of the box sometimes.

HC: What other organizations are you involved in on campus?

RS: I’m a resident assistant for Merner Hall and the vice-president for WSTU Radio. I do public relations for Helping Hands AUC as well.

HC: How do you manage your time when your so busy on campus?

RS: It is very difficult to manage my time but I have to prioritize. School is always first. Then after that my residents because I get a scholarship to do this. Then, lastly, I put my organizations. But, really, I just wake up taking everything one step at a time.

HC: What inspired you to compete in the Miss Omega Psi Phi pageant?

RS: I love this organization, first of all. When I first came to school, they were the first ones to step out and get to know the students. People judge the men of Omega because of little things they do here and there. But, me being a public relations major, image is really important to me. So, I feel like as Miss Omega Psi Phi, I should be able to change the image that they uphold.

HC: What did you gain from the process of competing?

RS: In the process of competing, I learned that things are not always going to go your way. Sometimes, there’s nothing you can do about it but keep going. Just because you don’t get your way, doesn’t mean you should give up.

HC: The principles of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated are scholarship, perseverance, uplift, and manhood. How do you uphold these values in your everyday life?

RS: Every time I think of manhood, I think of strength. A lot of people don’t think women can be as strong as men, but I definitely think we can. Scholarship because I think education is very important, especially higher education. Perseverance because perseverance and I have a personal connection. So many times, this semester, I could’ve just given up on everything and thrown everything in the trash. But something about perseverance says keep going, and when you keep going, you’ll see the light out of the situation. Uplift because I’m just an optimistic person and I like for everyone to get along. So, when I uplift others, it makes me feel better about myself.

HC: What are your plans as Miss Omega Psi Phi?

RS: My plans for next semester as Miss Omega Psi Phi are to implement my platform SHOWTIME. That is showing how women take initiative to mentor and empower young queens.

HC: Where do you see yourself five years from now?

RS: In the next 5 years I definitely see myself with my undergraduate degree from Clark Atlanta University. I’m thinking about getting my masters but I’m probably not gonna figure that out until my senior. I really want to work for a corporate company as far as brand placement and being the liaison between companies and the public.

HC: How do you feel this position will help you reach your goals?

RS: This position will help me because I feel like I’m such a shy person sometimes. So hopefully this gets me out of my shell, breaks me through and I’ll start speaking my mind more.

HC: Do you have last words you want to leave the readers with?

RS: The crown is always in your heart even when it is not on top of your head. I think that’s very important because a lot of girls think a crown and a sash define you as a queen but they don’t. You have to treat yourself with royalty and uphold that.
