A HerCampus Survival Kit.

Once a year, Her Campus chapters all over the US receive a survival kit from nationals. As women of color, receiving the products, we see that they are primarily catered to white women.

One product that we, at HerCampusCAU, received this year was a bundle of Bed Head products. Bed Head is a hair care line that provides products for colored hair, damaged hair, hair treatments, dry shampoo as well as a selection products for men. But what they lack is a collective group of hair products for people of color. As black students who attend an HBCU, we feel overlooked. Bed Head products are not compatible with our hair textures or maintenance. Although, the Bed Head TIGI haircare line may be great for those who have wavy, straight, and oily hair, it is not compatible to other with kinky, curly, coily and natural hair.

In our survival kit, we were also provided L’Oréal Paris skincare products. We were provided three products from the brand. The Hydra Genius moisturizer, the Sublime Bronze ProPerfect Salon Airbrush Mist, as well as the Sublime Bronze Self-Tanning Towelettes. The moisturizer was a great addition to the survival kit to prevent dry skin and hydration.

On the other hand, the other 2 products do not cater to people of color. The products focus is Eurocentric features and skin tones rather than that of darker complexions. Fair skin is the main targeted group for these products. Skin tones darker than that of European descendant.

If survival kits are sent out to HBCU’s, the products should be modified to serve the proper purpose for people of color as it does for the non people of color at PWI’s.
