Black Interns Taking Over!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CAU chapter.

The Black Intern.

This past summer I had the pleasure of interning and shadowing political commentators in the media field, a job that I hope to land at a corporation such as CNN someday. This summer, nearly all of my friends and I landed internships in big cities, however, black interns ended up in New York for the summer.

The feeling of your hard work adding up and achieving an internship is the best feeling any college student could ask for. The fact that you’re able to run the city with big names that you admire is incredibly surreal.

This summer, things like pizza slices the size of my face, chopped cheese, and $5 store minimums ran my entire summer up, but I loved every second of it. There is no better feeling than being surrounded by the fellow black creatives who are perusing their field. Big name companies like Goldman Sachs and NBC were on the hit list for my friends, while I shadowed people in Atlanta for CNN.

I wouldn’t have done my summer any different than being able to travel and see my friends and I all succeed with our particular crafts. God, thank you for allowing me to find my calling at only the age of 19. Thank you, God, for allowing me the opportunities that I’ve strived for since I began college two years ago. I know now that there is no task impossible enough for me to obtain because it is with your mercy that I am here.

I love seeing all my friends win, I love knowing that we will all make it out of college, doing the jobs that we desire more than anything. To the students that read this and feel lost because they don’t know what they’re doing yet, keep striving. This is all part of the plan towards becoming an even better version of yourself.

Whether you’re interning in New York, Atlanta, Tennessee or Ohio…you’re making it, and you’re making it all on your own. By the time you’re 20, you will look around yourself and realize the inevitable changes of life. Some of your friends are engaged, people you went to high school with are pregnant, and some of us are trying to pay to live in our dorms, but life is not a race, and it’s okay to pursue your goals at the pace you feel most comfortable in.
