2017 Fall Fashion Trends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CAU chapter.

Fall is a beautiful time of year. It is where summer and winter overlap, allowing us to be both fashionable and comfortable. This year, trends are bold through various colors, patterns and textures occurring on runways that have never been brought out for this season before. Below are the latest trends and how to style them.

A major trend right now, both off and on the runway, are furs. This is due to the cyclical nature of fashion in which we see trends from decades ago fall back onto our laps. Fur coats were huge in the 1960’s signifying economic status. People of the 60’s however focused on wearing real fur whereas we currently have both faux and real animal fur offered to us; Either or is stylish when worn correctly. It is best to not have a fur coat overbear other details of your outfit, as a main wardrobe focus of fall is layering-all aspects of your outfit should be seen. When wearing multicolored fur coats it is best to let the coat serve as a statement piece while the rest of the outfit compliments it. When wearing neutral colored fur coats each piece of your outfit should correspond with the colors of the coat. Neutral coats allow more room for color play while when wearing multicolored coats you are forced to work around the coat’s complimentary colors.

Many people would disagree with the idea of floral patterns being big in the fall but times are changing. Major luxury brands like Gucci have decided to flip the fashion world upside down by making floral a fall focal point rather than just in the spring. The best thing about this trend is that it is not much to keep up with. A majority of people may already have floral from last Spring to reinvent this Fall. Or maybe you have a disfavored floral gift from someone that you can now incorporate into your wardrobe. Florals are fun because they bring life to an outfit. The pattern can be worn simply with coordinating colors or abstractly with different patterns. However, be warned: pattern mixing is a bold statement that can detour into a look that is messy. Keep in mind when mixing patterns it is best to work with the colors presented to you first and then gradually add colors that compliment the various patterns at hand.

Now lastly a major trend that is always around during the fall is knitwear. This includes cozy sweaters, gloves, scarves, hats-you name it! However, one major difference in this set of knitwear compared to past fall seasons is structure and pattern. Designers have turned what would be seen as couture knitwear pieces into everyday wear. Such as knit sweaters with bubble arms or super bolder sweaters with fringe attached. Another difference in pattern is seen in scarves and hats. In the past we’ve seen pretty simple knit beanies and coordinating scarves, but now the wackier the better, meaning go all out with color and patterns. This trend can be compared to do-it-yourself knitwear you may have seen your grandparents or parents knit in the past. The point of the look is to be cozy and stylish and who doesn’t love the idea of that. Knitwear is always easy to coordinate into an outfit. Many times it should be what you work your look around as knitwear pieces will be the main items keeping you warm. The best thing to do with these trends is to pay attention to individuality and comfort. Fashion is fun. Fashion is a form of self expression. Treat it as such and you will always be happy with what you decide to wear.
