Over the rainbow: What it Takes to Have a Colorful Hair?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Casper Libero chapter.

If there are so many colors in the world, why should we be restrained to natural colors like blond, brunette and ginger? To have a colorful hair is not a new trend , but in the last few years, it became a fever, gaining more space in the media. This trend is also  popular among celebrities, like Kylie Jenner, Hayley Williams, Katy Perry, Demi Lovato, Avril Lavigne, and many others.

Instead of choosing only one color or dyeing just a tuft of your hair, another option that has also been a big hit is the ‘’rainbow hair’’, which  mixes lots of different colors. It’s gotten so trendy that on Instagram there are 423.823 posts using the hashtag “rainbowhair”.

Colorful hair gets everyone’s attention naturally, and could bring the most crazy and unexpected situations, like some girls told us. From strange looks to complements and criticism, people’s reactions are very different, like those who ‘’run away’’ from someone with a colorful hair and due to the shock sit miles away at the subway. By the way, some situations are reminded for being  outstanding, like when some religious people tried to ‘’exorcise the demons’’ from Gabriela Gomes’s body at a bus stop, saying that ‘’Jesus prefers her natural hair color’’. Cecília de Abreu told us that one time, her hair got complements from the Brazilian singer MC Bin Laden.

Despite being trendy, most people go for a colorful hair for many different reasons: from wanting it since they were children to thinking it was the best way to express themselves, as Ana Karoline Silano told us. In any case it is important to follow several procedures to keep your hair healthy and ensure the best results. There are many techniques to dye your hair: you can bleach it, use the old but gold crepe paper or even a hair extension. You can choose the way that pleases you the most and go crazy!

If you choose bleaching your hair, you have to decide where this process is going to be made: at home or at a hairdresser. But if this is the first time you’re dyeing your hair, it’s more advisable doing it with professional assistance.

There are some colors that require a more intense bleaching process, like  blue and purple. The dyeing can be done with temporary toners, permanent dyes, crystal violet or aniline. We made a list of the Brazilian and international best sellers when it comes to hair dying::

- best perm brands: Alfapard, Candy Colors, Exotic Creative and Keraton Hard Colors

- best temp brands: HairChalk, Neez hairspray, Aspa hairspray, Violeta Tec Italy mascara, crayon chalk, Color Bug and Matizador Le Charms sunshine effect

After picking up the method and the technic, there are still some things that need to be taken care of.  Fantasy color dyes  fades faster than the ordinary dyes, and could taint pillows and clothes, mostly if your hair’s wet. Karem Keiko told us that when she was at a party and it started to rain, the dye just started to wash away and tainted her white shirt. Besides, the bleaching can really  damage your hair and it comes with consequences, like the terrifying haircut, which Karem and Cecília had to go through . Knowing all of these problems, we made a list with some important and necessary cares to keep the hair healthy, hydrated, and to make the color last longer:

           -  Avoid anti residue or oil shampoos, because they tend to make the dye fade easier

            - Use only products that are meant for colorful hair, like essential oils and leave ins

-Always hydrate your hair after washing it to avoid having a brittle hair

-Avoid dunking your hair into the sea or pool water; if chlorine and sea water are known for harming natural hair, imagine what it can do to a dyed one!

-Avoid hair dryers, straighteners and babyliss; and whenever you need to use it, make sure you have a thermal protector leave in.
