International Travel Documents: All You Need to Know About It

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Casper Libero chapter.

Planning your first trip abroad can be scary, a lot doubts might come along with a big desire to explore new places. The secret is organization and a lot of research about the place you wanna go.

First of all, you need to know if the country request a passport to get into it. In case you are going to Argentina, Paraguai, Chile, Venezuela or Peru, all of them from Latin America, you just need an ID within the validity. If you are going to a country that needs a passport – an official document valid for 10 years, and you don’t have one, you need to go to Federal Police website and require yours.

You will have to fulfill all your data and then, to pay a tax called GRU – the amount today is R$257,25, and once the payment is done, you can schedule a day to appear on a Federal Police Station (it can be on Eldorado’s shopping, Metrô Tatuapé’s shopping, Light’s shopping and a few more), register your digital and take a picture. All the process, including the time until the passport is ready for you to pick up, shouldn’t take more than a month and a half, but it is not a secret that last year they had problems and a lot of passports took a long time to be printed.

Note that some countries request a passport valid for six months after the day you enter the place, so don’t forget to check this information.

The second part of your planning trip schedule is to be sure that you don’t need a visa or a vaccine to get inside the country. You can find this kind of information on the embassy website from the place you wanna go and on other tourism official websites. Be aware that are places you don’t need a visa in case you have one to another country, that’s the case of Canada, which announced last year that for Brazilians who have American visa or had visited the country in the last ten years, don’t need a visa to get inside there.

Some countries request a travel insurance for you to get into its territory. Basically, if you’re gonna travel to places like the ones from the Schengen Area – France, Italy and Portugal included, it’s mandatory to have a travel insurance covering at least 30.000 euros for medical expenses. However, it’s highly recommended to contract one anyway, doesn’t matter the destination – we hope your trip will be the most amazing one, but accidents might happen and it’s good to be prepared.

If you’re not 18 yet and are travelling alone, there’s one more step for you to follow: get a certified authorization from your parents or legal persons, registered on a notary’s office. Also, be aware of this step if you’re already of age, but is taking a minor on a trip with you.

Finally, organize all your documents – as the place you’re staying and when you’re coming back, take them with you and now you can think about the fun stuff, like the tourist attractions that you can’t miss; the restaurants, museums, parks you want to visit; the spots with a nice view to take good pictures and plan your schedule day by day so you don’t forget anything. Of course, a little of spontaneity during a trip is also amazing and gives you the chance to discover good unexpected things and places, so relax, trust in your intuition and enjoy the unknown.
