For 14 years, the month of July is chosen for the realization of Flip, the International Literary Festival of Paraty. It all started when the english publisher Liz Calder, while living in Brazil and sponsoring several Brazilian authors, had the idea of idealizing the festival, taking as a model the already known Hay-on-Wye, a literary festival in The United Kingdom.
The party is more than an event, it’s a cultural manifestation. Each edition pays tribute to a brazilian author, and based on this, the authors run through several themes such as theater, music, cinema and science, always seeking ways to compose this homage. During the five-day party, Flip turns Paraty into the stage of an encounter of ideas.

In 2017, the city of Rio de Janeiro is going to host the 15th edition of the party. The event takes place on July 26th, 27th, 28th, 29th and 30th. Along the “Perequê-Açu” river, 46 authors will be distributed in 18 tables. The so-called “authors’ tent” is set up for literary tables, forming an intimate and familiar climate between authors and visitors.
This year’s honoree will be Lima Barreto.
The edition will recover the trajectory of the writer who consolidated himself as the creator of innovative works of Brazilian literature, allowing reflections, both literary and in the fields of history and social sciences. For a long time Lima Barreto was linked to social literature, and his work and trajectory made possible many debates about Brazilian society.
Last year, the organization was questioned for the absence of black authors in its programming.
To circumvent this, the FLIP 2017 organization has ensured that at least 30% of the programming will be made up of black writers. Women, who were only 17 last year, are 24 in this edition – more than half of the 46 guests.
During Flip, party partners organize complementary cultural activities: Poetry, gastronomy, music, conversation wheel, literary debate.
The sale of the tickets began on June 28th, and the full schedule of the event is available at: http://flip.org.br.
