10 Movies That You Need to Watch Before the 2017 Oscar Season

The awards season is finally here! The 2017 Oscar will be held on Sunday, February 26 in Hollywood, and even if you are not a cinephile, this year’s best films are incredible. 

The highlight of the list that contains nine movies goes to “La La Land”, that received 14  nominations. It equaled the historic record of the Hollywood Academy Award, tying with ‘Titanic’ and ‘All About Eve”. 

If you have not seen any of the movies that are on the list, here is an opportunity to know more about the nominees. Just a reminder: you still have time to watch the movies before the ceremony!

1. “La La Land” 

Mia, an aspiring actress, and Sebastian, a talented jazz musician who is pursuing a career, find themselves in a city known for destroying hopes and breaking hearts. In the search of opportunities for their careers, the couple try to make the love relationship work while pursuing fame and success. Check out the trailer

2. “Moonlight”

A timeless story of human relationships and self-awareness, this drama chronicles the life of a young African American from infancy to adulthood and his struggle to find his place in the world as he grows up in a violent neighborhood in Miami.

At the same time, an essential portrait of contemporary African American life and intense, personal and poetic reflection on identity, family and friendship, Moonlight’s independent production is still an innovative film that echoes deep compassion and universal truths. Check out the trailer

3. “Manchester by the Sea” 

Lee Chandler is forced to return to his hometown to take care of his teenage nephew after his brother died. This comeback will be even more complicated when Lee faces the reason that made him leave and let his family behind years before. Check out the trailer

4. “Hidden Figures”

Hidden Figures is the incredible story of Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughn (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae), three brilliant African-American women who worked at NASA and were the brains behind one of the largest operations in history: the orbiting launch of astronaut John Glenn, a fantastic achievement that has restored the country’s confidence, changed the Space Race and galvanized the world. The visionary trio has crossed all barriers of gender and race to inspire generations to dream big. Check out the trailer

5. “Hacksaw Rigde”

Hacksaw Ridge tells the extraordinary true story of Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield) who in Okinawa, in one of the bloodiest battles of World War II, saves 75 people without firing a single weapon. He was the only American soldier who, during World War II, fought on the front lines without being armed, believing that even though the war was justified, killing was still wrong. 6. “Arrival” 

Louise, a specialist linguist, is called upon to decode alien signals left by aliens on Earth and find out whether or not they are a threat. The answers, however, could endanger Louise’s life and the existence of humanity. Check out the trailer

7. “Fences” 

In the 1950s, Troy Maxson (Denzel Washington) tries to raise children and take care of family in the best way possible. However, the task is not easy. He dreamed of being a baseball player and became a garbage collector. To make matters worse, the relationship with his oldest son is tense. Check out the trailer

8. “Lion”

Munshi lost his family at age 5 and lives in the streets of Calcutta, India. Concerned about the situation of the child, an Australian (Nicole Kidman) decides to adopt him. The years go by and when Saroo (Dev Patel) is about to enter college, he decides to go after his biological family using Google Earth. Check out the trailer

9. “Hell or High Water” 

Two Texan brothers – Toby (Chris Pine) and Tannar (Well Foster) – meet after years of separation to rob bank agencies that threaten family bankruptcy. For them, robberies are only part of a ploy that is the last effort to take up a future that has been stolen. The revenge seems to be close, until they find themselves in the sights of Marcus (Jeff Bridges), a Texas Ranger who looks for one last big chase on the eve of his retirement, and his comanche partner, Alberto (Gil Birmingham). As the brothers take one final blow to complete the plan, and with the pursuers at their heels, a shadow looms at the crossroads where New and Old West values ​​collide mortally.
