Halloween Costumes That Won’t Break the Bank

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Carleton chapter.

Let’s face it—nobody wants to wear the same costume for Halloween every year, but nobody wants to spend a fortune on a cheaply made costume. As students, we do not have much time to spend slaving over a sewing machine either, especially mid-semester! Here is a list of ideas that you can do at home, without breaking the bank or failing your midterm.

Classics in Your Closet

The first place to check for cheap costumes is your closet. It is surprising how some strategic accessorizing can transform a regular outfit into a complete costume! Buying a hat or face paint from Walmart is a lot more wallet-friendly than buying an entire ensemble. HINT: Throwing fake blood on anything makes for an instant costume.

Firefighter
In your closet: Red t-shirt, black suspenders, jeans
Accessorize with: Red firefighter helmet

Mad Scientist
In your closet: Lab coat and goggles from science class

Accessorize with: Crazy hairdo and mismatched clothes underneath

Cat/Dog/Animal
In your closet: Solid black/brown/white outfit (think skinnies/leggings and a long-sleeved top)
Accessorize with: Ears and tail of desired animal + make-up nose and whiskers

Lumberjack/Farmer
In your closet: Plaid button-up shirt, jeans, boots
Accessorize with: Fake axe or a straw hat (draw on freckles for extra credit)

Crayon
Dig into your stash of tight and bright clothes for jeans/leggings and a shirt that are the SAME colour (bonus points for a matching hat). Then print out two large Crayola logos and attach them to the front and back of your shirt (or draw them on if you don’t mind ruining your shirt). This is a perfect group costume!

Some Assembly Required

These costume ideas require a little more creativity, but they are extremely simple and quick to craft for those up to the challenge! They also tend to draw more attention than your typical classic costumes, making them great for parties.

Honey Boo Boo

Everyone’s newest guilty pleasure is this redneck pageant child, and now you can look just like her. Simply wear a semi-formal dress with a puffy bottom or an old prom gown (as sparkly and big as possible—no evening gowns!) and add a short, curly, blond wig and a tiara. To tie the whole thing together, make a sash out of thick ribbon that says, “HONEY BOO BOO” or “LITTLE MISS REDNECK” in fancy pink lettering. Make sure to wear an absurd amount of make-up!

iPhone App

Shamelessly show off your addiction to cellphone applications by dressing like your favourite one this Halloween. To make an iPhone app, you need two pieces of Bristol board, string, and decent drawing skills. First, punch two holes about a foot apart at the top of both boards. Then, use the string to create a sandwich-board look with the two boards, so that when the straps are on your shoulders the boards hang comfortably on the front and back of your body. Once that is done, cut the boards to resemble a square with rounded off edges. After that, draw or use construction paper cut-outs to create the familiar app icon image.

The sandwich-board can be used to make anything boxy, like a box of Oreos, a carton of milk, a book, a picture frame, mailbox, make-up, advertisement, etc.!

Fabulous Female Popstars

2012 has seen the emergence of some gorgeous and extraordinary women, so why not look as red-carpet ready as your favourite celebrity at this year’s Halloween party?

Taylor Swift: Cowboy boots, blond curls, cute dress, and a guitar.
Carly Rae Jepson: Dark hair, cute casual look, and a sign saying “Call me maybe?”
Adele: Big hair, lots of eyeliner, fancy classic outfit, and a jar of hearts.

London 2012 Olympian

Whether you are remembering the eighteen medals Canada won this year or looking forward to the Sochi 2014 winter games, it is never a bad time to rep some Canuck spirit! Start with your sportiest gear (lululemon and underarmour) and add as much red and white to it as possible. This works especially well if you have some Roots gear that says “Canada” on it! Add a replica gold medal, and your costume is complete!
